I use the Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. It is great. The one I use is pretty big 8x12 I think but they have all sorts of different sizes I would recommend getting a decent sized one because the small ones are really hard to use. If you really want to go all out then the Cintiq tablets are AWESOME but are pretty darn expensive. If I was doing graphics work professionally I would definately have a Cintiq.
Wacom also makes cheaper tablets as well such as the bamboo line.
