Here's my attempt: Duplicated Layer. Changed blending mode to create a contrast. Added a pattern layer and cut out a smaller square to create a frame, then adjusted some levels, curves and this is what I came up with:

Hopefully, this isn't breaking the rules. but, I ran this through PE4 and thought it looked worthy (IMO):
