Often but not always. I like having it around because there are some shots for which it is essential. However, there are also plenty (when the light is good or the tripod is just too inconvenient) where it isn't wanted.
Frequently I carry the tripod and end up hardly using it at all - it is just as well the one I use is fairly light and compact.
