Here is a case where both using a smaller aperture AND moving farther away would help bring more of the subject into focus. Even with stopping down, you may not gain sufficient depth of field so to increase that range you would need to shoot from farther back. Did you manually focus or use auto focus? If manually focusing, use a high contrast image on a card (like a playing card) about 1/3 the distance into the image. Depth of field advances 1/3 forwar and 2/3 away from the point of fouus. Can you provide us with some details on the lighting and the EXIF data?
