you are on the right track. Did you experiment with any more shots of the same subject? I would have lowered my point of view by placing the camera right on the that first 'stump' to really emphasis the perspective. The exposure is tough to improve in this case since you have a both strong darks and bright lights anyway. I would have metered for the dark area and sacraficed the lights in this shot. but that's me.
