well, that depends. every editing program is a little different, but this is how it works in photoshop...

"Save for Web" -> removes EXIF
"Save" and "Save As" -> retains EXIF

could be something similar in the program you are using, if its not photoshop. another thing, if there is a "preserve metadata" checkbox in the save screen, make sure that is checked, as the EXIF information is metadata.
