Do you Have a Camera That You Take Everywhere? [POLL]
In my last post revealing our last poll’s results Penny suggested that she’d like to know more about the cameras that people use – particularly whether they have a ‘take it everywhere’ type camera?
On a similar topic – I recently wrote a post titled 5 Reasons to Take Your Camera Everywhere in 2008.
So… this week’s reader question is:
Do you have a camera that you take everywhere?
If so – what type is it? Is it a camera phone? Is it a point and shoot? Or do you take your DSLR everywhere?

For the past 7 years I have taken a camera with me every single day. I travel for work and was told the first day that I should always have a camera with me on every trips because you never know what you are going to see. I thought that this was very good advice. How right it was. On April 9, 2005 I started making sure that I took a photo a day. I would do the project for one year and nearly three years later I can’t stop. I love it so much. I have had a few cameras in that time. I started with a Sanyo Xacti C4, then a Sony (I hated the sony) and then I switched to a Canon SD800is. If I know I am going somewhere that I will make specific photography time I will take my Nikon D80 DSLR. I now have a new camera a Sanyo EC1 (But that is for my on the water podcasts as it is waterproof.)

A Canon SD-1000. I have a D20 which is my “real” camera, but the SD1000 is so nice and small (which is why I got it) that I can take it everywhere effortlessly, even when I go running.

I have a sony SD200 that are carry around just about everywhere. It’s a small point and shoot.

I carry my Pentax Optio S5i everywhere, every day. Annoyingly this model doesn’t fit in an Altoids tin, unlike its predecessor which I used to have, but it’s tiny enough to fit comfortably into a front jeans pocket and takes super 5MP pictures for a point-and-shoot.

I carry a Olympus Stylus 770SW everywhere I go. I used to carry a Samsung NV-10, until one morning I opened my car window to take a pic and a huge blog of snow slid off the roof and dropped onto my camera.
Prior to these cameras, I always carried a Canon VT DeLuxe and later a Minox GL.

An olympus c5050 for the last year, and a u300 for the previous one. The c5050 is great! 5mp is all you need along with the fast 1.8 lens. No camera out there offers that anymore I think. After I took my camera out each day, I begin to realise that there are alot of opportunities to take photographs of people, interesting situations and also to preserve memories in candid shots. I love candid shots.. people who don’t know me think I’m crazy though.. like “What?? You carry a camera around with you everywhere??”

I’m always with a small P&S, right now it’s a Canon sd870is, I had a Fuji F31fd before but my wife lost it in a bathroom…
The dSLR is a Canon Rebel XTi, I carry it when travel and when I go somewhere I think I can get good photos… Not everyday because it’s too big of a pack with wide-zoom, tele-zoom, macro lenses, flash, tripod and so on…

Yes I do.
It’s a Ricoh Caplio R6 with an impressive 28-200mm zoom lens but small enough to fit in my pocket. What I like best is the macro capabilities of this small P&S beast.
My camera phone is for oral communication only.

I carry a Nikon D2x with a 28-70 f2.8 everywhere. Even to the grocery store.

My Canon SD800 IS (Elph)
This digital point and click camera does well for every day use. In the winter, it fits in my coat pockets very easily. In the summer, it fits in my cargo or carpenter shorts’ pockets. I have it so often, others expect me to have and are disappointed the few times I fail to have it on my person.
I do have a great backpack for my Canon Rebel XT which also carries my work laptop. For periods, I do use it. Maybe the strap on the other backpack breaking is a sign?

Nope. 400D, two lenses (so far) and a tripod is too much to carry around easily. And a point and shoot just doesn’t do it.

I have a Fujifilm that fits in my pocket and is what I carry all the time. I do take my Canon Rebel when I know that I’m going to be somewhere I want to take pics.
I had every intention of a photo a day, but I’m extremely limited as to where and when I can shoot at work, and the light is usually gone before/after work – yes, excuses – I need to find the unusual on my route and try to capture that.

I take my Nikon D50 with me everywhere. I have a Nikon backpack style case which holds the camera body(with lens attached) and four other lens. It also holds my laptop and has plenty of pockets for things like my remote, extra SD cards, my keys, the charger,my glasses and so on. Nice little bag!
You just never know when your going to run into a photo opportunity. I’d rather have my gear with me, than not!
Oh ya, my Tripod is always in the trunk of my car as well. It’s one that can be a traditional tripod or the center comes out to provide you with a monopod.

yes, i do carry kodak cx7430 in my left pant pocket. it helped me a lot many a times besides, this is the only camera which synchronise with external flash with the help of remote slave, so small prog. can be covered. last night i attended a marriage reception. there were lots of decoration(in India it is much) so i took candid shots and the shot of orchestra persons who sang my favourite songs.

I only carry my Nokia N95. The camera is “ok” for lit up places. If i’m going to a party, I bring my Canon Ixus 950 IS. And if I’m going somewhere to take pictures, I take my Canon 350D with my 18-50 and 70-300 lenses and a tripod. :-)

I always have my iphone with me. The pictures are not the best quality, but for a phone they aren’t bad. If I think I am going somewhere where I anticipate a photo op- I will take my full setup.

I have a Canon SD-1000 digital ELPH that I take with me everywhere I go. It fits nicely in an iPod sock, which goes in the shirt pocket.

I take my Kodak EasyShare point-and-shoot with me at all times. For an inexpensive camera, it takes surprisingly good photos!

I managed to get myself a capacious shoulder back, which as any girl knows is the only way to carry everything you need during the day. My EOS400D and occasionally a spare lens fits nicely.
I usually only carry the camera with a 28-105mm EF lens (which makes it a 45-170-ish on the small sensor). I also have an EF 50mm (make that 80mm), which has a useful f1.8 wide open aperture, which I carry about for candid indoor shots.
I don’t bother with a tripod every day, but it could roll about in the back of the car if I was that bothered.

I have an Pentax Optio W10 that stays in my purse and goes EVERYWHERE with me! I love my DSLR but being inconspicuous with a small P&S is priceless!

I always have my mobile phone camera (Sony Ericsson K800i, 3.2 MP) with me, and it is good enough for the occasional party pictures and random shots of interesting stuff. When I know i want to take “serious” pictures, i take my 350d with me.

I have a Canon SD800is that I carry in my shirt pocket at all times. I use it for taking grab shots when the opportunity presents itself. I also have an Olympus e300 with a variety of lenses that I use when I am going out for an assignment or a shoot. It simply isn’t practical for me in my day job to carry the Olympus with me at all times.

In summary here’s my take on it. I’m a freelance writer/photographer. My primary camera is a Nikon D200 but I carry a Canon SD550 in my pocket everyday, everywhere. I use the Nikon for scheduled photo shoots and when photography or when I might expect a special photo opportunity during that outing.
I live in the heart of Boston so with the pocket camera I take photos that I sell to local newspapers. I make extra income while walking the dog or doing my daily errands and exercise.
I also use it to take notes for stories (signs, addresses, contact information on trucks) and to video short interviews with people I include in photos.

Canon IS850.
Got it about 5 months ago, just for the purpose of taking everywhere. It fits in a pocket and I can go to the park or the theatre and know that I’ll have a photo of anything that catches my eye.
When I know that I will be taking the time for photos, I’ll take the full kit with the the Canon 10D. (Where is the Canon 5DmkII?)

Yes, I carry my EOS 40D everywhere. It’s not small, but has become such a part of me that I feel like something is terribly missing when I don’t have it. I usually keep my 24-105-L lens attached and have been very happy with any results. Of course, when I go out on an actual shoot, I have my spare body and 2 extra lenses in my bag. I wish I could be happy with a point and shoot…but that’s not happening.

I used to be kind of hit-or-miss about it, I would carry my SLR *most* of the time, but a lot of times it was just too inconvenient.
Just picked up a canon G9 though, and now it lives on my hip. It goes everywhere with me.
It’s really the first “compact camera” (I don’t say point-and-shoot because it’s really much more) that gives me an acceptable level of performance, and is small enough to take anywhere.

I carry my Canon Rebel XT in my purse at all times with the 50mm f/1.8 attached. Every time I take it out or just grab my wallet and leave my purse behind I regret it — there’s always something to shoot!

I take my camera with me, wherever I go. It’s a Canon EOS 350D. Usually I carry my “light configuration”, consisting of two lenses (Canon 60mm Macro and 10-22mm) and one Speedlite 580EX II, although I like to take my Canon 17-55mm IS with me. Camera’s always on my back, though, snugly inside my Lowepro Slingshot 200.

I am a supervisor for our Police CSI unit so I carry my Nikon D-70s all the time. However, my personal camera is a Canon S2-IS, which is always somewhere close at hand. I took it instead of the DSLR when my wife and I spent a month in Australia last year. I added a lens attachment(barrel) for protection and an additional handhold.
While its certainly not a pocket camera, its small and light enough to be non-intrusive, its 5mp is enough resolution for most shots, its got an excellent image stabilization feature, and it shoots video with stereo sound. I researched for months before deciding on this little gem, and it really does the trick!
Frankly, I’m spoiled by its versatility. There are a lot of good cameras on the market, but for me, this was the best quality/money trade-off available when it was purchased 2 years ago.

I too carry my Canon G9 with me everywhere. Even when I go skiing, living in Whistler that’s up to 4 times a week :o) It’s great for the quick shot of me and my buddies and video feature is awesome. My DSLR comes out for paid shoots and specific days I plan on shooting something

Yes I always have it in my bag. I use Canon Powershot A710 IS, a 7.1 megapixel camera with 6 X optical zoom and Image Stabilizer.

Yep I sure do! I only take my camera and a couple lenses in my bag. Though I have to admit I don’t pull it out as often as I thought I would. I feel like I take more pictures when I head out on a photowalk. I just recently got a nice tripod and haven’t been lugging that around but I see that in the imediate future. LOL hello sore back!

I have a Kodak Easy Share that a friend gave me and I’ve been using it as my carry everywhere camera. I also have a Canon DSLR that I’d like to take everywhere but no case for it. For a quick picture of kids, other family or the outside the Kodak works for me.

I own a daycare and I have 2 small boys of my own. Therefore, yes, I have a camera on me at all times. My daycare has its own website and parents love seeing their kids photos as the day progresses when we have special events. The photos section of the page is password protected and all parents sign a “publication” agreement. But, it works and my parents enjoy being a part of their kids day when they might otherwise not know what is going on. They can then ask their children more specific questions at pick-up than they could if they have to wait on the child to bring up the days happenings.
Mine is just a little Canon Powershot A75 that I use because it fits in my purse, my brief case, my pocket even. We have a good camera for other occasions but for some reason, I can’t find it for some reason to tell you what kind it is. I know it is a Cannon too though.

I have an Olympus E-510 with which I’m learning about DSLRs, but it won’t fit in my handbag (especiallly with all the other rubbish in there, as my husband never tires of pointing out ;-) ) so I gave in to fashion and got a fujifilm z100fd which fits in quite nicely. The IQ may not be perfect, but at least I always have something to capture those moments with.

I carry my Sony A100 around with me everywhere, I slipped my camera holster onto the shoulder strap of my messenger bag for easy access. Despite the ease, I have really not developed a habit of pulling it out often enough.
I’m thinking about getting a point and shoot so that I will be less hesitant to use it.

Since I got my DSLR for Christmas I now carry the camera I replaced in my purse at all times. The purse camera is a Nikon Coolpix P&S. But when I go to a planned event I take the Nikon D40x.

I have a Casio EX-Z1050 that is literally at my hip whenever I go somewhere for a few simple reasons:
1. Overall it is pretty diverse in capacity.
2. For the most part, I do not do staged shots or those at a longer distance (for example bird photography), and for many years my 35mm film camera carried a 35-105 lens, which is right down this camera’s alley (f7.9-23.7 digital or approximately 38-114mm translated to a 35mm format)
3. It and the small camera bag I carry it in fits on my belt with no problem so I don’t even realize it is there many times. Additionally,it fits close enough to my body so as not to be in harms way.
4. It is a 10.1 Megapixel so with the 8GB SDHC Card I have in it, I am allowed almost four changes of battery before I have to download (approximately 1216 pictures in the 10Meg/Fine mode). To translate: I can shoot lots of pictures and cull them out later during a quiet time.
5. With a little imagination and insight, I can adapt one of it’s 39 built in modes into one that is close to what I might need (including the ability to create my own mode for situation). I also have a camera that gives me a pseudo dSLR capability although only at around a 3 Megapixel rate.
6. In that this camers is so small and inocculous, my real passion can more easily be fulfilled, that of candid photography.
7. I am no longer saddled with a large bag and all the extras, so am far more mobile, which translates into more opportunities to catch life as it is lived.

No, I do not carry my Fuji Film s9100 everywhere I go, its a little too big plus I am at school all week long and there is nothing to shoot there, on weekends I do not go out much either and when I do its usually just to a store or something so there is no need to take it with me. Miami is extremely boring.

I only have one camera, a Canon S70, and I take it with me almost everywhere, especially since I am now doing Project 365+1. Having it with me allows me to capture the weird stuff that happens on an everyday basis and to keep in that creative frame of mind which carries on to my writing, blogging and other adventures. And you just never know when you’ll see a UFO or capture film of the Big Earthquake. ;)
A DSLR wouldn’t fit into my lifestyle very well.

I usually bring my dSLR with me everywhere since I can take off a lot of the big attachments that make it look expensive. Plus, I live in a very calm suburb of a suburb…so I’m not worried about it getting stolen off of me or something. However, I am looking for a nice Rangefinder-like digital camera. Although the true digital rangefinders are so expensive.
I also bring with my my Olympus OM1 and a Voigtlander rangefidner sometimes.

I try to take my Canon 870IS with me whenever I’m expecting to be out and about. I don’t carry it everyday to work (as only rarely is there anything even slightly photo-worthy on the trip).
It’s small enough to pocket and not worry about. I carried a similar (older) model with me to London and never felt (much) like a tourist. The photos may not be prize winning, but they do bring back lots of good memories. :-)

I have been using a Kodak Z7590 with 10x optical zoom, for the past couple of years, but now I have a Nikon D40x.
I bring the Nikon everywhere now. and the Kodak is a backup when the Nikon batteries are charging.

My first digital camera was a Fuji S7000 which was a great camera and it went everywhere. I upgraded to a D-SLR early last year and it still goes almost everywhere with me but now I look like the consumate tourist with my Lowepro Slingshot backpack of gear. The tripod lives permanantly in my car so it’s never too far away either…. Luckily I had the foresight to by my wife a small Fuji V10 “happy snappy” which takes really nice shots as well and being not much larger than a cigarette packet, is easliy stowed in her purse or a bum bag.

Used to be a bright yellow Minolta underwater camera-took great shots. Now a Fuji FInepix S602ZoomPro-in Saudi Arabia-DIplomatic Quarter-have to be respectful but lots of opportunities for interesting reflections/shadows of Arabic shapes/walls and inevitable feral cats!

My newest camera is a Canon SD800IS. I love the small size.It truly will fit in my pocket. Because of it is convenient I carry it with me much more than my previous Canon G-1.

We’ll see how long this lasts but in the week since I bought my first DSLR (Nikon D40) I have not left my apartment without it. Before that I had my iphone with me at all times and would take the occasional picture. Now… let’s just say it’s been a life changing week.

I always have my Sony Cybershot DSC-P100 with me and have taken some great shots with it along the way.
I love my Pentax K10D but it’s not practical to take it everywhere. As well as taking it out specifically to shoot, I try and take it with me at least once a week on random not-planning-to-take-photos-but-I-might-see-something-I-like trips.

I take my D70s almost everywhere. Stays in the trunk of my car most of the time, but I usually have it with me. My lowepro backpack bag carries all my gear (body, 3 lenses, flash) as well as a lighting stand and an umbrella.

We keep our old 4MP FujiPix S5100 in the car in a case with extra batteries. I can do B&W, Standard and Chrome color and also video. It is always there no matter if we arte shopping, going to the doctors, or whatever.
When we are going out to shoot we take our Nikons.

Sony H2. I take it everywhere. I’ve been learning more and more about photography, and am getting better and better with Photoshop. I’m very happy with this camera, though wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. It takes a little more work and not your typical point-and-shoot. Still, I’m really enjoying it and wouldn’t buy anything else – until I learn enough to use a digital SLR.

This life I lead is rough, it’s not any sort of city where I live. I break cameras almost every day, some get smashed, some just go missing. Today I’m using one I gave my youngest daughter last year, she took pity on me, a Canon 550

I have my Canon Pro 1 with me everywhere I go. It’s a lot of camera in a small package. If I’m going on a shoot, it’s my Canon 30D and my 400D Digital Rebel. I always have at least one long telephoto (70-200 2.8 or 100-400 IS) as well as Canon’s 17-40L and 24-105L IS and various accessories.

I also use my iPhone, but I carry a Sony DCS-T1. It has nice zoom, also does video, is very tiny, and tough. My son had dropped it several times (after removing it from it’s protective case).

Nokia N95 8GB. Always in my Pocket. Serves as a good video camera too with its 640×480 @30 FPS capability.

I’m impressed at how many people are managing to carry around a camera all the time. Penny’s input from the earlier thread really gave me a new perspective for the usage of carrying a small camera, and now I’m seeing that lots of people have many diverse methods.
I’ve used my Palm Zire camera, for the offhand quick shot (especially for things I find funny), but don’t find the quality to come close to what it could be. I’d love to carry around my D40, and maybe an extra lens, but I don’t know how all of you are managing to find the extra energy and back strength!
You guys are inspiring me to consider putting my old Olympus C4000 back into action!

Yep. Until recently it was a Casio Exilim Z750 but that got crushed in a drunken incident over Chrimbo so was replaced by a Fujifilm F50fd. Both are nicely pocketable without being unusably small and they take very nice pics :-)

I personnaly carry a canon S80 around with me the majority of the time. Not everyday but quite often, not that small but smaller than an SLR and fits in my pocket easily.
It’s got full manual controls and it has a 28mm lens that is a F2.8!

I always have my Samsung Digimax P&S with me. The most recent pic I took on the fly was water crashing on rocks from the bay where I live. The wind was so strong I had to balance on my car. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get close because of the spray and the zoom isn’t nearly good enough but I still got some good pix.

I have Nikon D200 + Nikon 18-200 + Sigma 10-20. To much weight and value to carry everywhere I go.
Mobile phone isn’t a real camera… it’s a toy that ALWAYS make me remember my D200.
And a point and shoot just doesn’t do it (to be good I would have to invest to much money. I prefer to invest in glass)

I don’t take my Canon 400D everywhere. I take it most weekends to wherever I am going, but it is too bulky to carry around. I have a camera on my phone, but do not use it as the photo quality is too poor!

I recently got equipped with a Canon XTI 10mp, 3 lens, a few filters and tripod and carry the whole lot with me at all times.
I always have my point and shoot anti shake in my handbag for those quick shots when its faster to snap than to take out a lot of gear. Since I shake quite a bit I find that my little olympus will often take better shots than what I can get trying to figure out the right combination for the dslr.
You know how women are with their purses…. would’nt be without it.

I very rarely leave my dSLR at home…unless I’m home. The “tools” I carry are my Nikon D300 with an 18-200mm, an 85mm f/1.4 and a monopod. If that were to fail, bust out my Nikon Coolpix P5100. My last resort has to be my Palm Treo 700w.
Like most of us, I can not afford to miss a shot. It’s my bread and butter.

I carry my Panasonic FZ20 with me everywhere right now. Once I upgrade to a DSLR I most likely will carry that everywhere too. I like the idea to carry a good point and shoot everywhere but the problem is what if you get a great shot…now it was taken with a camera that has bad resolution. I want to capture all my images with the best quality I can so if I do happen to get a great shot I can print it in large format and not have to worry about the resolution and print quality. Also
I want to become as comfortable as I can with my higher quality camera so the more practice I get with it the more proficient I will be at using it.

Its pretty tough to lug my DSLR everywhere. So when I went shopping for a new phone, a decent camera was on my “must have” list. Got the Sony Ericsson P1i, 3.2mp auto focus and I get decent shots out of it in daylight.

I have my Nikon N73 with me all the time. It’s a cell phone with a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens, flash, red-eye reduction, autofocus, 20x digital zoom. The phone also has a miniSD slot and I have a 2GB card in it so I never run out of memory. The quality of the pictures are excellent and comparable to a point and shoot type of camera. Even the day time video quality is excellent. Not so good for night and dark shots, but excellent for day time.
other than that i have my d40x that i take with me if i go anywhere special

I had no idea about many stuff on my camera so I decided to read the booklet that comes whit my camera and it is called “The Nikkon guide to Photography with D80″. I learnt A LOT about the camera itself and many photographing techniques while I was reading it. I even read some of the techniques that was introduced here in DPS. So, I am just wondering how many people have actually read the similar booklet before they start shooting? and is that really useful to them?

Yes, well any where the kids go we keep it in the diaper bag, a Pentax Optio 43WR. I’ve got a little case (game boy) which holds the camera and 2 extra CRV3 li-ion rechargeable batteries, which are rated at 1100 mAh but last longer than 2500 mAh NiMH AA’s. The camera is water proof and takes memory limited 640×480 movies, great outdoor camera, inside the flash is quite weak. Great companion to my DSLR.

I shoot with a Canon 40D, and for the time being my carry every where is a Sony DSC-P200. It is in dire need of replacement as the dust spots on the sensor are getting so numerous and the lens cover only opens with my finger….. I have been looking at one of the Canon digital Elphs, but which one…….Maybe a Lumix with 10X zoom??? So many choices, but I am hesitant to move away from a known brand name!?

I always schlepp my S3IS with Lensmate 58mm adapter and UV filter attached and Sony 1.7x teleconverter (comes very handy on long shots). They snugly fit into a relatively small Samsonite bag of Walmart provenance.

Yes I always carry a camera with me. Only my camera phone though. It’s a Sony Ericsson K850i which has the perfect quality if I just happened to go on a happy snap spree. Sometimes I take my point and shoot camera, Fujifilm S5700. But I only tend to do that if I’m out on a day trip thing.

20D (or 40D) with one lens (17-40/4L, 35/1.4L or 100/2.8 USM Macro) and 420EX is always with me during workdays (packed into Lowepro Toploader Zoom 2).
During weekend, I might take something longer with me (i.e. 300/4L IS) for a walk.

I carry an older Olympus point and shoot that is water resistant everywhere and keep an older Kodak 5mp digital in my car. I can’t say I use them every day, in fact the more I get into the quality of my photography the less I care to pick up the little cameras for snap shots. Why? because I know once I get started I will have wished I had my better D SLR with me and absolutely will spend far to much time taking pictures. I often completely loose track of time and other responsibilities once I get started.

My Canon SD800is is always with me because it is very small, light, fits in a pocket or the smallest purse, and takes amazingly good pictures. When I suspect there might be good photo ops I take the CanonG9 (which is a lot heavier than the 800 but lets me shoot a dumbed-down version of Raw) or a Nikon DSLR with lenses filters etc. I am very happy with the Nikons and the G9 but the SD800 is with me from breakfast to bedtime day after day.

I can’t say that I carry any camera everywhere. I used to when I had a picture phone, but I dropped that in the swimming pool. Both my Nikon CP 4500 and digiscoping gear and my EOS Rebel XTi seem to accompany me whenever I go birdwatching, but they certainly don’t go everywhere with me.

Whenever possible, I carry my ‘travel’ kit, a Nikon D80 with my 18-135mm Nikkor lens. I have a cool little sling pack for it and that seems to be all I need for most of my stuff. I don’t travel with all my lenses, and I don’t carry a tripod…though I keep it in the trunk of my car at all times.
My wife just upgraded her camera leaving behind a Canon Elph. I may start to carry that in my coat pocket.

I have my Canon Digital rebel XT that I have been taking with me everywhere. For one, we are building so everyday I go to where our house is being built so I can take daily pictures of the process. It has been so much fun. I also like to keep a camera with me just in case something major happens…like if there is a fire somewhere, a car accident, major weather conditions or so. I like to get those shots and get them to the news station. One time we had some serious cummulus clouds that I shot outside. I sent those to my news station. They used them on the news (weather). Yup…my D80 is a bit large for the pocket with the flash, dual battery pack and 18-200mm lens. I lug that when I’m planning on shooting. But I have a Nikon Coolpix P5000 that lives in my briefcase. That’s always handy if something unexpected pops up.

I always have a Nikon S500 with me in my briefcase or my pocket. I frequently need to take photos at work on construction sites and the D80 is just too big. It also is not quite as sacrificial. I used to carry a Canon G2 most places, but it was too large as well. The S500 fits nicely in a shirt pocket and takes pretty good pictures.

Yes I have a take everywhere camera, a Canon SD650IS. This is in addition to my Canon EOS XTI. The SD650IS is very advanced for a point and shoot type of camera and has many of the same functions as my Canon XTI.

It small 7mp and very rugged. Being freeze proof, drop proof, crush proof, and water proof to 33ft it can take most of what I can give it.
The optics aren’t the best but its a trade off for being so durable

I carry my Pentax K10DSLR with me everywhere in a smaller size Tamrac backpack. I pretty much have my entire kit in that bag — SDcards, cleaning cloth, dust brush, you name it. I also carry an old manual Canon AE-1 film camera, usually loaded with B&W film. Sometimes I’ll have a tripod or monopod, but not usually. Maybe I should throw them in the trunk.

My Panasonic Lumix was perfect for almost all light conditions, and it was so small I could fit it into my tiny girl pockets and not be bothered with a purse! It’s battery life when I didn’t use flash also meant that I went weeks without recharging.

Yes, I do, and it’s a BAD idea that I am rethinking…
my Nikon D-80 goes with me everywhere, and while I believe I’d make a great product tester having dropped it on concrete once, floor tiles twice, without damage, the lenses don’t do quite as well (my 18-200 VR is at the repair center; cost of impact is $250), although they’re very tough.
What I can’t resolve is what to do at the beach. In the last few weeks, it has jammed twice because of sand getting into the shutter button despite my best attempts to protect it. Had to race for a blower and pick it out with a needle while having a panic attack. The moist salt air is another story – if it does to my camera what it does to my dog’s nickel chain collar (need to upgrade to stainless steel and see how it does), it is not going to last long. We aren’t even talking about splashes from shaking dogs and running kids (at least I’ve never dropped it there). Plastic bags don’t seem to stand up to the work and end up picking up more sand than they protect you from. A dry sack has been a Godsend for quick dodges but still not enough…
everyone says, “Use your case!” but it’s kinda hard to shoot from inside your case :-)
So my dilemma is: is it REALLY worth it? I left it home the last two times and couldn’t stand it. Of course, there were a dozen shots I wanted and my old CoolPix pocket camera just didn’t do the trick. What’s the point of a good camera if you are afraid to use it? On the other hand, what’s the point of getting a few great shots – that I don’t do anything with anyway – if I’m going to end up not having a camera at ALL? I can’t afford to just keep buying new ones as needed…

This can sound strange, but I never go out there with my Panasonic FZ-50. The reason is I live in Argentina, and is a bit risky to go out there with a heavy camera in hands. The possibility to go back with nothing exists, so I take it only from time to time, when I want to go to take pictures somewhere, and I know exactly ‘where’.

I have a a Nokia 6120 camera phone that sits around in my top L/H pocket whenever when I’m awake. I initially bought a camera phone to assist if I ever had an MV accident (I’m a truck driver), but with the better resolution I find I;m using it all the time. My first love is still my Canon EOS 400D.

I have an Olympus C-60 point-and-shoot I take everywhere I go. On a recent business trip to Hawaii, I took it on a submarine and obtained excellent underwater photos through the viewing ports. Did not wnat to take my good DSLR and take the chance of getting salt water on it

My phone has a 2 mp cam on board and has amazed me with some of the images it has captured.

My Fuji S5600 is always in the car but thats where it lives. I gave my Fuji E500 to my son when I traded up but have since borrowed it back because it’s handier to carry.

Yes, bought a Canon EOS400D last year and absolutely love it. Take it everywhere possible – often hanging around my neck which can sometimes be a bit combersome but am so wrapped in having such a good camera that I don’t find it a burden. My family have started calling me Cecil B. de Mille!

Yes, I have an Olympus FE-280 and I keep that in my handbag. It’s nice and compact but I get a lot of trouble with the photos being spoilt by noise.

I have a Ixus 950IS – my only gripe is that i can’t control many functions! But it has alot of fun functions on its own :)

I carry in my back pack a Canon PowerShot SD630. It is the first 3″ screen that I have come across. It powers on very rapidly and performs generally very well.
I also own a Canon Rebel XT and often favor my SD630 over the XT becayse the image quality and difference is not noticeable (except where more shots per second are needed. In this situation the XT wins every time!)

No. I have a Panasonic FZ7 which is fairly small and light but not small enough to carry everywhere. I used to have a Canon A70 which was a bit smaller but it died. The camera in my cel phone is too awful to count as a camera.

Used to take my Canon A70 to where I know I’ll take photos, just got a Canon S5, which is not so “portable”, so less with taking my camera to where I need to anymore…

I usually carry a Sony W5 compact around – it’s a point and shoot but with just enough manual override functionality to be a bit creative with it. I also have an adaptor fitted which takes 37mm diameter filters. Sometimes I prefer the pictures I take with it over those from my DSLR as they’re more spontaneous.

I used to take my Rebel XT everywhere, but there were times that I didn’t want my camera and lenses to stick out in the crowd. So I bought a Canon G9. I LOVE IT. I use it more than my rebel now for everyday use.

I carry my Canon SD850IS with me about 85% of the time. 100% of the time when I’m on a trip away from home. Right now I am pondering on whether I should buy a Nikon D40x. If I acquire the DSLR, I would probably still carry the Canon point-and-shoot with me most of the time; and the Nikon depending where I am headed.

Does my Nokia N95 count? If not – then no, I don’t. :( Wish I did, but my D80 can become quite heavey after a while.. and those that are Mums with kids at home, you’ll understand about the state that a handbag can get into.. wrappers, tissues, and all sorts of junk. I just can’t bring myself to put a $2k camera in there.. ;)

By default I always carry a camera because I always have my cell phone with me. It’s not the same as having my 5D but I’m reminded of the saying: “The best camera is the one you have with you!”

I take my D200 everywhere. Literally!
I grab it from my nightstand when I get up in the morning, and put it there when I go to bed. The rest of the time I carry it around with a 17-70mm 2.8 in a Lowepro Toploader 70 (very handy bag) with a SB-800 flash (I stitched the SB-800 holder to the side of the camera bag). Which gets a mite heavy at times…
So when I want to travel light (ha ha), I just grab the D200 and stick a 50mm 1.8 on it.
There’s been four days where I didn’t take it with me for a few hours (quick drive to the grocery or the like) and each time I’ve regretted it. So now it stays with me every waking moment. Thanks Project 365!

My 20D about 98% of the time. The other 2% it’s a Cybershot. The 20D goes to work with me. It goes to the grocery store, to get gas…everywhere.

I have a Sony A100 DSLR and keep it with my everywhere I go, except to church unless there is a reason to have it there. My Lowepro slingshot has replaced a handbag! I am always sorry whenever I do not not have it with me – usually accidentally – and always see something I would have liked to shoot.

My main camera is a Nikon D70s, at the moment-normal lens plus a 70-300 in a Lowepro 300 backpack .
A very good all round DSLR.
I have been carrying a P & S round daily since about 1965 starting with an original Olympus Trip I have had a variety of small cameras since ending with at present a Fuji F30 ,the best so far and have made more money out of these than the “big ones” on a non commisioned basis.

It is my new years resolution to take a camera with me everywhere I go. I have been partially successful at having my new D-Lux 3 with me at all times.
My next thing to do, is to leave my Kodak V570 in the car and then I really will be prepared for every picture taking opportunity.

Yes. I have HP’s Photosmart R847 that I keep in my purse. Never know what you might come across to shoot. I had the R837, which I like better than the 847, but was stolen alone with my purse back in December. I wasn’t able to readily find an 837 to replace it so I went with the 847.

My husband hates to shop so I use my camera when redecorating to photograph the item and feature card if
appropriate so I can show items such as lighting fixtures
to him and see which he likes best. It saves a lot of time and eliminates having to attempt to describe the items.
Mine is a Cannon PowerShot 850 and I love it. it fits in my purse and is always ready to go. I just delete the ones that
are not needed and it saves the say.

I don’t have a pocket-size digital camera, but nearly always have with my either my D80 with two lenses, in a very compact sling-type case or my smaller Canon S2IS. The choice normally depends upon what kinds of opportunities I think I might run into as well as how much mobility I require. In my film days, in addition to my SLR, I carried a pocket-size Nikon, Pentax or Minox-B, and I do miss that convenience.

I have taken a Canon Ixus with me always and everywhere in my handbag for the past few years and don’t feel complete without it. The cameras have evolved over the years as I have dropped them down the escalator and similar, currently I’m on 850 IS. I got a new “baby” in the last half year – Canon EOS 400D – and LOVING it, but that’s for more deliberate photography.

Pentax Optio! Because of my job I travel a lot and like to take pictures of the places I visited. I have a Canon XTi with 3 lenses but for traveling a small camera is better.

I just got a PowerShot 870 so that I can always have a camera with me; it’s just not practical to lug my DSLR around with me all the time, although I would love to. So far, having the 870 has been great. I do use my camera phone a lot, too, if I want to email a photo right away.

I always have a small Leica DLux3 with me, similar to the Panasonic, that gets me 10MP and a wide latitude from wide-angle to telephoto. To get the best results, you have to understand the f-stop/shutter speed relationships, and not just rely on Point-N-Shoot. Had some great pixs, but it’s not the same as my D2X or my M8 – but then again, it’s not supposed to. Like Bob Krist once told me, “The secret to great photographs? F8 and be there!”

I’ve previously mentioned that I usually carry my Canon 850IS with me. I have recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix TZ3 that I like because of the Leica lens and the 10X optical zoom. So .. depending on where I am headed off to, I now just take one of these. If I am just hanging around somewhere it’s most likely the Canon because of its size (smaller than the Lumix). If my wife and I are off on a day trip somewhere it’s the Lumix that I bring.

Since a month or so I try to have with me everywhere a dslr-like Canon (the Canon S5 IS). It’s not too big, not too small, has a nice optical zoom (36-432 mm equiv.), pretty good lens (2.8-3.5) and full manual controls :)
Well, you have “full auto”, as well, when you need it! :-)

Now that I have one, I carry my DSLR (a Pentax K10D) with me everywhere I go. For a couple of years prior to getting the DSLR I carried a point and shoot super zoom (a Canon S2IS).
I may carry my camera with me all day and not make a photograph — and I am okay with that. But if I leave my camera at home, I always see a photograph to be made and regret being unable to make it.

I’ve been trying to take a photo a day, so while I may not take my camera everywhere (picking up or dropping the girl off at pre-school) I do take it most places. It is a Canon Digital Rebel, usually with my 50mm and 28-300 Tamron.

I take my Nikon D80 most everywhere. I have a big purse and working on throwing the back out of alignment. I suppose if I could find a really great point and shoot I would take that everywhere as well.

Sony Ericsson K750i – *always* in a pocket – great for snaps
Panasonic LX-2 – *always* in Crumpler bag – for wide angle, more printable snaps
D2x + standard and wide angle lenses – less frequently in Crumpler bag – for more serious fun!
I have found the camera phone is very versatile (despite certain foibles) and *very* much better than no camera at all. After reading the above – I can’t wait to get a compact D-slr, make that a D90 or similar :-)

Well, I always have a camera with me no matter what since my phone has a 1.3mp camera in it, but it’s useless for anything other than “OMG! Bigfoot!” type shots. So, depending on whether I’m on the motorcycle or in the truck, I either pack my 28-70L and 1D MK2n or 50 f/1.4 and my 20D. I refuse to leave the house without a camera unless I’m going somewhere where there’s absolutely no chance of getting it in…like a concert at a large venue.

I live on the Oregon coast & I carry a Cannon Powershot A540 with a water proof cover.
It is amazing the shots you can get when you can put your camera right down in the sand & tide pools.
I have people tell me there is no way I took the photos where I said I did.
I also have a Cannon D30 that I use once in a while.
