Choose Your Own: Weekend Photography Challenge
Over the last few months we’ve had a lot of fun with our weekend photography challenges. In each case we at dPS have chosen a theme, announced it and you as our valued readers have gone off and shot an image on that theme and come back and shared it with us in our comments section.
This week we’re trying something different – instead of us naming a theme, YOU are going to set yourself an assignment.
You know the type of photography that you want to improve on most – so this weekend choose a topic that you think will stretch you a little or that is something that you’ve been meaning to explore – and then go and shoot on that topic.
Examples:
- You might need to take a headshot of yourself for your blog – ‘headshot’ could be your topic.
- You’ve been meaning to use that new macro lens but never get around to it – ‘macro’ or ‘up close’ could be your topic.
- You have a family trip to the aquarium planned this weekend – ‘jellyfish’ could be your theme
- You’ve always wanted to try a technique like ‘slow sync flash‘ – there’s your topic!
It’s totally up to you (the main thing is that you get out and shoot something and improve your photography this weekend) – but to help keep you accountable what we’re asking is that pick a theme and share it below before you go and shoot it. This way you’ll have your assignment in mind before you go out.
Once you’ve taken your shot/s – select the best 1-2 and come back to this post and share it with us – either by sharing a link to it on your blog, flickr page or other photosharing site – or by embedding it into your comment.
Can’t wait to see the shots you take this weekend!

I know EXACTLY what I am going to do…. I’ve been meaning to go out and work on some macro, close-up shots with a bokeh style. I don’t know why, but I’ve always had a difficult time being pleased with the results of my shots of that style. Maybe some more practice will change that?

I want to work on child portraits. Since my two grandkids will be here Sunday, I’ll get my chance.

Got a great book today: David Busch’s Digital Photography Bucket List, 100 great digital photos you must take before you die. Okay, a tad morbid, but you get the point

It’s my birthday and I’ve been challenged to take a self portrait of myself blowing out candles, waving a noise maker. We’ll see if my 4 month old lets that happen.

This weekend will be a study in portraits. i will take the portraits of at least three people using Christina Dickson’s tips from “Portraiture in Motion: How to take Striking Portraits in 15 minutes or less”
Should be fun!

I want to do some good night photography. Things always look different in the dark, and its something I haven’t really explored much of yet.
March 27th, 2010 at 7:11 am
I’m going to have a go at Smoke Art Photography, this should be fun.

It’s super sunny today and we are going to the nature center. I need to practice taking pics of people in bright light. So can I say mine is “full sun”?
March 27th, 2010 at 10:17 am
I am going to practice taking an action shot. I work at a gymnastics/cheerleading school so this should be fun!
March 27th, 2010 at 10:30 am
I’m going to try to freeze some action using manual settings of my camera. So far I’ve done this with auto settings. I need to leave auto settings behind.

I am going to practice outdoor photography with early morning light at an old grist mill home site near my house.

Finished my challenge. Self Birthday Portrait
Self portraits are incredibly difficult to do, all the setup and the timing. I think my daughter looks cute though.
March 27th, 2010 at 2:34 pm
I tried one of those night time light drawing pictures you suggested in an article this week. It was SO fun. My husband and I made it a “date” night that we could do at our house while the kids were sleeping. We kept taking pic after pic. It was SO fun! Here are three of my favorites. It was really hard to narrow it down. I loved how fun this was and how cool the pictures turned out. I know they are way novice but I really enjoyed the process.

little background on mine: there’s a truck stop in town called “Newell’s” which is where all the college students go to study (or after a night of binge drinking lol) … a number of small colleges are around here, so people drive from nearby towns for scary waitresses, crappy service, horrid coffee, and greasy food lol … well, a friend of mine that used to hang out there when she was younger got married to someone with the last name of “Newell” so between these two things, she commissioned me to take a shot of the sign to hang in their house (she lives a few states away now) …
sorry, got wordy, but giving it some context lol … without further adieu:

@leec80 … well, you are at the PERFECT place to learn how to really use the full potential of your DSLR … i’m not in any way affiliated with this site, but it has improved my photography skills 100 fold since I first started following it! I’m a die-hard DPS-er now!

I’ve always wanted to take a long exposure photo of running water to get that powder-sugar effect, and so my Weekend Challenge is “Long Exposure”.

People Being Themselves
I want to work on catching people in the midst of doing things, hoping to find interesting poses and set a theme with the background. I’m hoping this one catches a bit of the isolated life of a street musician.

i wanted to experience with long time exposure so i went out and during a meteor shower took this photo
i took these pictures at 11:45P.M when i got home from work. i set up my tripod on my deck and pointed it s,se. i set my aperture to be 4.0, iso 400, i also used a 18-55 mm lens at 18 mm focus. i left my shutter open for exactly 50 minutes. i used my Nikon D60 to take the picture. “meteor shower was happening as well”
i did not do anything else in photo shop other then just adjust the exposure to make the picture a bit darker. i find the picture to be awesome and that i was able to get these awesome colors out of it.

Well, sadly, that was a dismal failure! I took up the challenge of trying to improve my motion shots, particularly shooting flowers in the breeze. Had to delete the whole 35 photos – waaaay too noisy – they were simply shocking and I would never post them on my Flickr page! Just can’t get a big enough aperture on this camera to compensate for the fast shutter speed and the high ISO is appalling
March 28th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
I mentioned above that I needed practice in manual with full sun and backlit people. I took a few to get this one to turn out, but I think it’s great. She was watching some kids geocache. She was a real sport while I kept focusing on her and fixing my settings.

My challenge will be AVOID CAMERA SHAKE as I’ll be flying over an erupting volcano soon. It’s a little plane, and I’ll be using a zoom lense… and I think neither a tripod or a bean bag will help…
Thanks for everything
March 30th, 2010 at 1:05 pm
Ok, here come 3 pictures of the Icelandic volcanic eruption. My challenge was AVOIDING CAMERA SHAKE.
I couldn’t find any material in this forum – only recommendations for photographing while on a big-aeroplane flight.
Challenges: no tripod, no bean bag. Zoom lens (which magnifies camera shake), litle plane that rolled more than a roller-coaster, very cold and very hot air, quite windy. Tinted glas on plane window.
Solutions: don’t forget flight-sick tablet! Hold camera tight with right hand – left hand on the window to stabilize the camera, and body working as a shock absorver. Of course, a rather fast shutter speed.
Please enjoy! I did, incredibly much!!!!!!!

Our challenge this past weekend was to photograph the rare Oconee Bell wildflower that, from what we were told, only blooms in one area of South Carolina and some place in Africa. We used several of the techniques we learned from Steve Berardi’s Wildflower Photography eBook.

And here are my projects this weekend:

I’m very new to photography…just got my first SLR. My good friend who is an incredible photographer challenged me to get a picture to go with a status I had expressed on Facebook, “Ahh…the sunshine is an elixir, diapers are drying on the line, iced coffee is wonderful…life is so good. Thank-you, Jesus!” So, that is my challenge for myself.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:36 am
My goal for this weekend was to finally use my camera outside! I got a DSLR for Christmas but have been too overprotective to expose it to the harsh elements
I went to Dingmans Falls, right down the road from my house…we’ve been having great weather.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:45 am
Well, I haven’t been to the waterfall to shoot some “milky water” yet, but I did something that was part of my challenge. I went to the “Hawkwatch” to shoot some migrating raptors, and took the opportunity during a live bird demonstration to get some close-ups. Here’s the important part: I spent the WHOLE DAY in Manual mode!
In case the image doesn’t show, you can see what I’ve got loaded so far here:

Long exposure came to be my theme this easter. I was looking at the Volkano eruption from a mountainside 2 km. from the eruption and discovered that I forgot the thriphod.
I used my canes and rucksack, a stone, a pile of stones and in one location a pole.
My biggest problem was to frame my photos properly, lying on my stomac, trying to use the finder as well as getting the camera stable.

Attempting to balance ambient and flash:

Wanted to experiment with using flash to fill with a fairly bright background. Hard to find anything much brigher than the sun.
Used 580EXII on manual and full blast, under exposing the sky by about a stop to get details in the clouds. Messed with flash power and apeture till I got it balanced the way I wanted.
