I'm using 500D as my second dslr, after Nikon D80, and overall, it is a great machine. People who made comments about shooting video in dslr machines doesn't know how good is it. One thing 500D is lacking: 24 fps video mode. If you shoot 24 fps 1080p video with some good lenses, you can do anything with a dslr.
So people, I know you have hurt feelings, but come on, do not tell me that you love 450D more than 500D. It is not making any sense.

I am glad to read so many comments on this page written for a change by very sensible and rational photography enthusiasts. All new cameras are definitely wonderful because they are equipped with the latest technology which might not be needed to take great photos. We use our camera for fun and to test our prowess in producing great photos. I have a Pentax 200D for 8 months and I really enjoyed using it. Most of us don't use our cameras to its fullest potential. Its a challenge to produce great pictures with what you have. So enjoy and appreciate the camera you have. I am still using my Minolta 300i film camera with prime lenses bought in 1990. Still producing wonderful photos.

Hey serial8
Can u confirm that 500d has a tilt screen. That's an awesome feature
I didn't see it in the specs ( during a quick look) so far Sony dslrs were the only dslrs to have tiltscreens( correct me if I m wrong)

Loving how almost every comment here is either defending the author's current camera, or from people that have never used the video mode on an SLR and are bitching about how terrible it is and how wrong it is that somehow the jump from 6.5fps to 20fps and from jpeg to avi (or whatever) is the work of Satan or something.

Almost everyone here as a dSLR. Your dSLR is probabally fine. Your ageing (dare I say vintage) film cameras are also probabally fine. That's great. Now someone that doesn't have a dSLR has some more features for their first dSLR, which probabally costs the same or less than you payed for your now discontinued cameras when they were first released and, in many cases, when you bought them. Your equipment doesn't have feelings, it doesn't need to be shielded from reality.

My 2p's worth:

If you're shooting with a previous model in the XXXD line, and you're in the market for an upgrade, this is a worthy contender.

If you're shooting with a previous model in the XXXD line and aren't in the market for an upgrade, don't stress - when you're ready, there will always be something better than what you have now.

Of course that doesn't mean I wouldn't give my right arm to trade one of my 40Ds for a 5D MkII, I'm just trying to remain logical and reasoned!
