Canon EOS 40D starts to Ship
We’re hearing that the brand new Canon EOS 40D DSLR has started shipping.
Amazon have it in stock for order in a ‘body only’ form at Canon EOS 40D and it is available for pre order with the kit 28-135mm kit lens.
Who’s ordering one?

Stop will ya Darren! I’m trying not to be tempted. :)

I’m going to buy it from my local independent camera store. They’re an essential element in my journey as a photographer and they need my business FAR more than Amazon.
Oh, and they get it in stock today.

Bought one last Thursday, with a 50mm f1.4 and 24-105mm f4/L.
Due to getting home from work after dark, tomorrow and Sunday are the first days I will finally get to use it in daylight!

Hi, I’m thinking to buy my first DSRL camera, do you think that I should get one of these? What you recommend? At the moment, I have the Canon A620.
Thanks :)

I saw that earlier today when I was researching prospective birthday wishlist items. I would have ordered it on the spot if it weren’t for that price tag! Do let us know if you stumble upon any deals! :)

I plan to get one, but I think I’ll be sitting on the fence until I see some reviews.

I ordered the body-only version a couple of days after pre-orders were available. I want it mostly to complement my 5D and to turn my 400mm lens into a 640mm for wildlife. Amazon now says “In Stock Soon” so they probably have used their allotment on pre-orders. My order still says expected ship date is September 20 however.

Gulp. Ordered it with the 28-135 from ritz camera to replace my Rebel XT. They say it’s ready to ship today. We’ll see.

Me, Me, Me! I’m ordering one, but it still doesn’t seem to be very clear when they will be released in the UK so I haven’t put a deposit down anywhere yet. I’m very excited - it was the liveview feature that really sold it to me as it will make shooting at all those funny angles with a tripod much easier

Awe, man… they’ve gone to the live viewfinder thingy. Imagine how g-stupid people are going to look taking photos looking through the back of it.

Not yet, and not from Amazon anyways. But probably I will buy one later.

Hi,
I’ve got a question. I am in Canada right now and I wonder if it is possible to order from Amazon.com. I think it should be possible but what I don’t know is whether I would have to pay costum fees or something like that.
Has anyone of you guys some experience with that?
Cheers
Dominik

Chad it’s probably to early to tell if it’s a great cam or not as so few people have them in their hands - however it’s feature list is impressive and the initial feedback that I’m hearing about it is pretty good.
I’ve owned a 20D and a 5D and have always been very impressed with Canon DSLRs so I’m expecting something of a similar standard and quality.

No doubt I’m getting one - eventhough it will be my first dSLR. At first I wanted the 400D, but the feature list made me go for the 40D instead. It looks awesome. Slap on a couple of decent lenses and a speedlight 580 EX II and I’m flying. Can’t wait!

I’m with Jeff. Waiting for the Nikon D300. Competition is good…

I got mine Tuesday the past week. What a toy!
Super silent shutter, fantastic menu, easy to use but for me the outstanding part is the noise control and the quality and clarite/detail on my pics. The live view is better than one can imagine, especially with the 10times zoom on the LCD screen…. super focus is what comes to mind for macro work.
On the negative side, Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom are not ready for the RAW files yet, a pain in the neck/butt for me.
If you are in the market for a Canon or an upgrade, buy this toy with your eyes closed. I upgraded from the 20D and for me this upgrade is more prominent than when I upgraded from the S1IS to the 300D, and far bigger than from 300D to 20D. This is a new world.

Forgot to say… this one feels even more solid and of higher quality than my 20D. The pictures, the portraits I first took shows detail like, I suppose, only a 14bit can produce.

I still cant make up my mind between the 30D and 40D.
The 40D is 300 pounds more expensive than the 30D and I want to be sure if its worth that much additional money before buying it.
Because if I get the 30D, I’ll be able to get some good glass to go along with it for the extra 300 pounds.
And since this is my first dSLR, it makes things even more complicated. If someone can help me out, I’ll be really thankful to them.

Dominik: As far as I know Amazon.com does NOT ship to Canada. You want to get the camera from bhphotovideo.com instead. That’s where I’ll be getting mine. I’m also in Canada and customs will charge you TAX ONLY. I believe a trade agreement nullifies duty on electronics. Having said that, I find it much cheaper to get my camera supplies through a US retailer even after paying customs taxes and shipping. I usually save anywhere between $100-$300!!

Hmmm… My 30D ‘aint even out of w’tee yet, but, i’m very happy with it… 40D has some nice / interesting extras… and plus, If I bought the 40D now i’d be killed by my missus… hmmm

I have more money than I know what to do with, so this may be in the offing for me…but I’m still having such a marvelous time with my A100 and the 30 or so old Mini lenses I’ve acquired over the years that I don’t know when I’ll have the time!
September 2nd, 2007 at 7:25 am
I’ve only had my 30D since 4/2006. Would be nice to have a second body (even an Xti would do it for me), but I can’t even justify that since I’m not using my 30D as much as I should be. Which is why I joined this forum… to do the assignments that will help me develop creativity and gain experience. Thanks! :-)

sinergy:
it’s not that amazon.com doesn’t ship to Canada - cos for sure, I’ve had some things ship successfully - but rather, that some of Amazon’s suppliers don’t ship. Mild difference, but still…
Dominik:
Try eBay, or Henrys.com You should get a good price from either of those.
JR:
I’m, with you. I have the 20D, but don’t fully utelize it just yet (www.flickr.com/teddyboy). My big debate is whether to go with the 5d, even if I orphan some glass (the 10-22 zoom). I’d miss that. But then again, I want full frame sensor and 12 m-pixles even more.

I received the two lens kit yesterday. My hobby is astrophotography. I noticed when reviewing a live view shot that I have a red burned out pixel. Should I return the camera for another. Thanks

I will wait to buy mine as I want to make sure any bugs or issues are out of the way, plus it dont hurt getting a rebate in the process. This camera will be the hottest-selling SLR next to the XTI..It will leave the same mark and huge impression as its former brother the 20D. Combining the 30D and the XTi into one great body plus lots of extra features is the best thing Canon has done….Nikon eat your heart out!!
September 3rd, 2007 at 4:57 am
In Canada you can order directly from Henry’s Camera, a large chain. (And they take cameras in trade when you want to upgrade, or sell stuff sitting in your closet!)
I have the Rebel XTi and have been reading about the 40D all week… I would love to hear more about what people think of it. Please - anyone using this, let us know what you think!

I want one… But am going to wait.
1) For the RAW converters to be available (specifically on the Mac).
2) More reviews. Just to be sure.
3) A few months to let them get the firmware kinks out of it.
And of course, then I’m off on an overseas holiday… so I can save a few buck on our GST.
PfA.

I’ve got 1 at Bestpricecameras.com for $839. 40D sweet!

@Zee:
Bestpricecameras.com is a scam site. Save your time and money and please don’t order there.
