Bokeh Lights: Weekly Photography Challenge - Digital Photography School

Bokeh Lights: Weekly Photography Challenge

This week your photography challenge is all about trying out the Christmas Lights Bokeh tutorial that we ran earlier in the week for yourself.

That tutorial has been spread across the web like crazy this week and I know a lot of our readers are trying it out – so show us what you’ve come up with.

I know not all of you celebrate Christmas but remember the technique will work with many types of lights. WIth some experimentation you can do it with candles, night skylines or almost any other type of light.

So read the tutorial and get a little inspired by the images in it and then give it a go and post your best results so we can all see how you went!

Once you’ve taken your ‘Bokeh Lights’ Images – choose your best 1-2, upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to them or – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSBOKEH to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Note: while we don’t mind you posting previous images that you’ve taken that fit this topic – the real point of these ‘challenges’ is to inspire you to go out and take NEW photos. So perhaps instead of just trawling through your old photos to find one that fits – grab that camera and go use it too!

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks DIY Lighting challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

    I took this on 1st oct'12,

Bokeh of lights behind as if underlined by the forground stretched spring

In this one I focused on the sunrise visible behind the mountain visible in the due drop.

    Another view of same

Sunrise right in front of you and dew drops on the grass.... a perfect combo for some macro bokeh shots
    here's one I tried...

Shot this one on the street here in Tallahassee FL with a Pentax K10D equipped with Pentax 50mm f/2.8 Macro. It was blowing a little bit on the evening of the 25th so the rose isn't as sharp as I'd like.

This challenge was a lot of fun. When I tried to do the Bokeh Lights with the shapes I found that I usually had to crop the photo because the picture was kind of in the shape of the cut out (the third picture is an example of this). Is that supposed to happen? Also, sometimes the picture would look like it would curve, does anyone know how to prevent that? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

I was playing with my dog and trying to get a Christmas"Y" Shot. So here is my results .I had a bit of trouble with the lighting on Everest.(My Dog). If anyone has good ideas about the lighting on the dog let me know I was using strobes. Everest is dark because if I used more light you could see the wires and the black backdrop became grey.[eimg link='' title='DSC_8477' url='']

After I had read the tutorial a few days ago, I gave this technique a try. Here are two of the pictures I took:
The lights are coming from bulbs hanging in trees along the Yarra River here in Melbourne.

I guess this works much better with something in the foreground in focus. Need to go out and try again :)

Funny that this is the challenge this week. I did take the tutorial and run with it some. In fact I set out to recreate one of the example shots myself. I am about 1/3rd the way through a 365 day project which involves LEGO so I gave it a shot for one of my photos.

  • Major Bokeh

    December 17, 2011 07:23 am

@jesseadams, while that is a lovely shot of the Parliament building in BC, that is not bokeh. Those lights are all in focus. Bokeh refers to the part of an image that is out of focus. It's often done with shallow depth of field to make the part of the image that is in focus stand out from the background. Like in a portrait for instance. The example above has the Polariod camera in focus and the bokeh is accentuated by the holiday lights but it doesn't have to be made from lights either.
