What Type of Photography Do You Do?

PhotographyPhoto by ssh

It’s the weekend (a long one for many of you) and time for another ‘reader question’.

What type of photography do you do?

I know, having spoken to many of you, that the readers of Digital Photography School use their Digital Cameras for a large variety of purposes - but it’d be interesting to see some sort of a summary of it all in the one place.

Are you into Portraits, Landscape Photography, Sports, Macro etc?

Or do you use your camera more for capturing the day to day life of your family and friends?

Or are you more of an occasional photographer, getting your camera out to record trips (travel photography)?

Or perhaps you have a really targeted interest like taking photos of surfing, fireworks, dance, birds, food or even the moon?

I’m keen to hear what type of photography you’re into. Feel free to also share a link back to any photoblog or flickr account (or any other photosharing site) that you have that shows off your favorite type of work.

PS: answering this question will not only be interesting and a little fun - but it will help us continue to improve DPS. I’m looking forward to seeing your answers.

  • Johnny Malkavian Says:

    Street photography and architecture.

  • Jamie Says:

I shoot a wide variety of things, but my favorite things to shoot are probably music-related events (http://www.pbase.com/jdepould/mikado or http://www.pbase.com/jdepould/clinic06 or http://www.pbase.com/jdepould/cujazz)

Close second is the (school) newspaper work I do, some sports (http://www.pbase.com/jdepould/sports), but mostly candid people stuff like this (http://www.pbase.com/jdepould/image/74265127 or http://www.pbase.com/jdepould/image/74350484).

I like to call myself a chameleon, but I really just fell into all of this and make it up as I go. I also shoot portraits on occassion for a lot of my drama/musician friends, it’s a good source of a extra money, but I don’t particularly enjoy it.

  • Karol Hodgson Says:

I love to photograph so many different things, maybe because I am new to this and I just got a new camera and keep buying lenses, I have to always be shooting so my husband doesn’t ’shoot’ me.

Anyway, I started out photographing mostly flowers and insects, now I am into macro shots of faces. I am currently trying to piece together photos of my family’s eyes. I would like to put together faces combining both my children and then their faces (eyes mostly) and us. I’ll keep you posted on how that works out.

  • Luis Cruz Says:

My gallery (which hasn’t been updated recently) is dominated by events like plays and concerts.

I guess I enjoy shooting people when they’re not aware of the camera.

I also enjoy shooting everyday objects and, depending on how you look at it, making them look prettier than they are, or capturing their inherent but often overlooked beauty. That, or I just enjoy the fact that they never got conscious sitting in front of a camera.

  • Dustin Cook Says:

A lot of sports photography (mainly skateboarding but I enjoy shooting most sports) and landscape shots are fun. Sunrise/sunsets are some of my favourites too.

  • rygood Says:

Though I like a wide variety of photo subjects, expecially travel photography, I have a new obsession with concert photography. I’ve had the opportunity recently to shoot a couple shows, and I’m lovin it. The challenge of the low light combined with the exciting subject matter and lighting make it pretty much the most fun I’ve had shooting.

  • yaNN :: world within Says:

I’m ridding along the line of spontanious (portraits..) shots and still life (architecture, landscapes..). I also love details so I believe I’ll hop in the macro land soon :)

  • Megan Says:

I mainly do shots of my kids….I love scrapbooking and therefore take photos of every little thing my children do! I much prefer candid shots of them, as opposed to the posed ones.

I would love to take a great photo of a landscape, but I’m not that great with composition of these sorts of shots.

And I LOVE Digital Photography School…..I learn so much from here - thank you!

  • Eric Says:

I take my Nikon D200 everywhere I go. I do a lot of international travel for the news media so I shoot whatever I see, wherever I am. I enjoy street photography the most, just snapping away at anything that catches my eye. Lately I’ve been in the Middle East, so most of my photography is coming from there.

All of my photos go up on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/96347334@N00/
and some go into my blog at http://www.zen-traveler.blogspot.com.

  • gray Says:

i like the style of nationalgeographic

  • AC Says:

Lights, Flowers, Clouds, and Water - and the interaction between them for the most part. Architecture only if it really catches my interest.

  • Michael Morris Says:

I shoot a fairly wide variety of subject to keep learning and expanding. These include portraits, sports, macro, and abstracts. My passion is for landscape and wildlife photography.

  • Flip Says:

I enjoy shooting action sports. My flickr page is split in to skiing photos and random camera phone photos. I’m saving up for a DSLR for next ski season, because when your at a competition with a press pass and a point and shoot camera no one will give you any respect, and they will step right in front of your shot. I love shots with alot of depth and stitched photos that show action.

  • BobHansen Says:

I do mostly Fashion & Editorial shoots. I’m just getting started, so a lot of it is personal work. I guess you could call it Fine Art photography, but it’s basically the same as my commercial/commissioned stuff…just without a client.

My site is linked above, but here’s also some open directories of newer stuff I haven’t added to my portfolio yet:

  • little mick Says:

    Child Portraiture, and wedding photography.

  • Bogdan Says:

For the most part I photograph whatever I find to be interesting in everyday life (could be anything from juicy fruit to a stranger on the street), however I’d prefer to photograph people more and not just from the hip level :) So, I would greatly appreciate if Digital Photography School can post a suggestions on how to approach strangers on the streets to be your object of interest and not to annoy them. This kind of advice would be much appreciated.

You can see my work at my Flickr page here http://flickr.com/photos/bnosach

  • Andrew Ferguson Says:

My favourite types of photography are portrait, street, and landscape.

I don’t tend to do sports or macro, but I love capturing the people around me and the places I go. I’ve also developed a habit of taking photos of the work of a few local graffiti artists when I see it around town.

I tend to take photos of my daily life, the most.

  • Nadine Says:

I’m involved in the early-childhood education sector, so I take LOTS of portraits of children. But I’m afraid all those albums are unlisted.

I also love landscape photography, and living in beautiful New Zealand I could easily go crazy in this genre. I try to limit myself to taking photos of places that hold meaning for me:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/nadinearmiger

  • Mjuboy Says:

I dont have any particular type of photography style, I generally take photographs of anything which looks nice.

But to answer the question, I would say Macro, Landscape and Street.

  • texmex5 Says:

I love macro photography, but lately as I now have a DSLR I love to make portraits too :)

  • John Bokma Says:

Mostly nature, close-up. Currently butterflies, for example: http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2007/06/27/butterfly-safari-near-san-marcos.html

  • zappan Says:

My interests are mainly concert photography (http://foto.muzika.hr/), mostly because long term being connected to music, and the environment in which i started my photography hobby (http://gallery.kset.org/)..

But, when there’s a chance, i play with some street photography, nature or macro, but that’s not what i can do on a regular basis because of my regular job, and a love in concert photo which i spend my time on…

  • Michelle Potter Says:

I mainly like to take photos of my kids — candid, posed, action, close up, whatever. But since I got my new DSLR I’ve shot anything I find interesting. I love macro photography of flowers, bees, butterflies.

  • Julián Rodriguez Orihuela Says:

Daily life, dance rehearsals, portraits, (some) landscapes, and some nightlife.

  • Audrius Says:

I like to take photos of the landscape. Some times - macro and almost never portraits.

  • Sharon Says:

I mainly photograph my kids. I get some OK posed ones but I want to do more candid ones. Would love to try some landscape stuff (sadly, the chances of me getting out of the house when the light is good are virtually nil). Have tried the odd photo of butterflies etc in the weedfest that is my garden - sadly a macro lens is not in my budget though. My goal at the beginning of this year was to try an learn more about how to use my camera and your articles have been very helpful.

  • Paul Says:

I’m like Audrious, mostly landscapes and sometimes macro. I also like to try capture details/get things from ‘different perspectives’. Virtually never people.

  • Graeme Smith Says:

I shoot mostly nature, landscape, macro, skies/clouds, flowers and travel shots though I enjoy and would like to be proficient at all types of photography. Currently most of my work is non-flash.

    Flick: http://www.flickr.com/photos/graeme_smith/

  • TK Says:

Architecture, public art, still-life, nature and some self-portrait (using Canon A620 with flippable screen). To be honest, I don’t have enough guts to take pictures of other people (even my friends)… I’m just too shy for that.

  • Reggie Says:

I used to say “Nature and Culture”, meaning landscapes and architectural scenery, and usually without any distracting people in the frame. However, recently I have been trying to put more people into the photos. I am fortunate to have the colleges of the University of Cambridge as my practice grounds. Occasionally, I take snaps of friends at events, but I usually turn down requests for formal events, such as weddings. My camera, a Canon PowerShot Pro1, is not particularly suited to catching the moment (due to shutter delays) or low level lighting (too much noise above ISO100).

  • C Says:

I’m a photowalker - anything and everything. I’m new to photography so sticking myself in a random situation allows me to exercise whatever little i know about it. Also, shooting with others is great for the learning experience.

  • Come2HaveFun Says:

Landscape, culture & things coming across in travelling in Japan.

  • Richard Strahin Says:

Being rather new to the world of photography I am still
“skipping” from landscape to vintage cars, old tractors, candid shots of people or whatever strikes my fancy. I am finding more enjoyment in nature photography and macros of flowers and birds than other shots.

  • Gary Blackman Says:

I tend to focus on nature shots but also do macros, abstracts, and almost anything in my line of sight.

  • NaturesPixel Says:

i shoot Birds and wildlife mainly as ya know…

tho I’m stepping out of my comfort zone to shoot portraits also ^.^

  • photonoob Says:

    * Macro photography of plants/animals/insects as I find them

    * Travel photography

    * Portrait photography

‘Portrait’, though, isn’t so much studio portraits, but surreptitious or unaware street/public portraits. (I should say that I always go to the person I’ve photographed and tell them, and will delete the photo if they ask me to. Since I photograph for a media organisation and I do this sort of photography for work, I have ‘cover’. I don’t do it so much when I’m out on my own.)

  • Aaron Sher Says:

I’m an amateur diver, and I take most of my most interesting shots underwater - e.g. http://www.pbase.com/aaronsher/turks__caicos. I use an Oly p&s in an Oly housing - now, if I could only learn to get close enough to the subjects…

  • kspaulson Says:

I’m an accidental photographer. I started out shooting photos of food to go with my food stories in our local newspaper. As I got better, I started to shoot other things. Then the writing gig morphed into lots of education stories, so I’ve taken a lot of shots of children, big and small. And then religion reporting, so lots of photos of stuff going on in our churches.
So it’s been work, but my interest is growing and now it’s becoming a hobby. But my really good photos are all accidental ones…and there aren’t really very many of those, either.
I use DPS and Flickr photo groups and a couple of books to see how my DSLR works (had a point-and-shoot until Feb.), so I do a lot of playing. And praying!

  • JAE Says:

I shoot everything: from nautic to races, from fashion to concerts… as I work for an internet media. What I like the most is fashion… lights, makeup, production… everything there is ‘controlled’ and gives the best results.

  • joshua longbrake Says:

    Travel photography.

  • michael Says:

I shoot whatever is available. Plenty of nature, cityscapes, random shots of friends, bugs on flowers. Whatever looks intriguing.

  • Dennis Says:

I usually stick to landscape and portraits but I am becoming drawn to photos of textures lately.

  • Laura Bashlor Says:

Wintering in Florida gave me a chance to photograph such exotic birds! When I bought my Canon Digital Rebel XT in February, I went a little nuts and photographed every bird I could find.

Upon our return to Michigan I continued photographing birds in my backyard. I added a photo or two of my garden, since I have about exhausted the limited species of birds visiting my feeders.

Photos from both locations are in my blog.

  • Luis Says:

I only have a point and shoot, but enjoy doing a lot of nature photos. I’m saving for my D-SLR and reading a lot to know what to do with it once I get one. Cheers.

  • Emory Mclaughlin Says:

I like a little of everything and carry my camera everywhere. One of my favorite subjusts is the ocean. Not only is the water nice but then you get the reflections off the ocean. I have some of my various pictures on flickr

  • Tad Says:

To make a living, I shoot weddings, portraiture, and event photography in Chattanooga, TN. However, when I’m not shooting to make a living, I’m shooting my environment - my children, nature, etc. I’ve enjoyed reading this blog/forum because of the broad range of topics that are dealt with.

I would enjoy to see more in depth discussion on the following topics:

-studio lighting (snoots, honeycomb, comparison of brands, remote triggers, etc.)

-reviews of products that I may be interested in purchasing (e.g. fong whale tail).

    -photoshop editing, etc.

  • Viguy Says:

Primarily I enjoy nature/landscape shots, but also shoot many day to day activities around town. Would like to improve my skills in photographing people.

  • Jill Says:

I am a scrapbooker, so I mainly focus on my daughter, Kaitlin. She has been the inspiration for me to improve my skills as a photographer.

  • Jordan Meeter Says:

I definitely enjoy street photography and architecture. I like nature and landscapes as well. I like portraits but I’m not very good at them!

  • ersa Says:

mainly take photos of landscapes, candid shots of hubby and family, friends.

  • Cheryl Says:

    portraits of my grandkids
    or them in action
they are a 4 year old girl and 20 month old twins (boy and girl)
also traveling sights (last summer from Maine to Alaska)

  • cleo Says:

I love taking photos of people, though my best to take of are kids. Love action shots, lots of spontaneity. Though I do enjoy taking macro shots of every day things and seeing them from a new pespective.

  • ryansmith111 Says:

To this point I have mostly photographed my kids and my dog, but through this site I’ve developed a desire to branch out and try new things.

  • Cici Says:

    Flowers

  • Zach Everson Says:

I’m all over the place (I’d probably be a better photographer if I focused).

  • Desmond Gunatilaka Says:

Mostly landscape and now starting on Macro.

  • olin Says:

    Mostly macro photography and landscape.

  • mysticeyesx Says:

currently i am learning about macro
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/mysticeyesx/
i also like to do fireworks, birds, travel and landscape

  • Brian Purkiss Says:

I’m an amature photographer who just takes pictures for fun.

I’ll take pictures of anything - but people and landscape mostly.

  • Friðriksson Says:

What I really like is travel photography and occasional shoots. I think I would be really into weeding photography and shooting events, such as conventions/conferences (already done one, loads of fun).

I do landscape mostly though since there is not much more for me and portraiture, which I have not gotten totally into since I find it hard to find models.

As I never really like to limit myself I will have to say I like a bit of everything, but National Geographic type of photography really catches my attention. Telling a story about remote and exiting places is just so cool! (and fun)

  • Paul Wilke Says:

Daily activities of my friends and family for the most part. Portraits of friends and family as gifts and for my address book. And wildlife whenever possible.

  • shroticg Says:

mostly candid ,which covers any subject that comes before the camera. only for portraiture i have to arrange in studio. my advice to carry a camera, may be a 4-6 MP compact digital camera. you won’t be disappointed when abruptly the opportunity comes before your eyes and you want to capture in yr camera.

  • Rick M Says:

I am really into Macro photography. I have a Canon S3 IS and love it. I photograph Flowers, bugs, most anything I see that looks of interest.About 99% of my photos are taken on my own property. I also enjoy shooting Landscape shots.I am amazed how photography has changed my perspective. Things I never noticed before I now photograph.

  • masshuu Says:

i enjoy photgraphing eevryday life, especially people when they aren’t ‘posing’ for the camera. i like landsacpes,a nd cityscapes,a nd night time shots about town.

  • CJP Photos (Chris) Says:

I don’t shoot people! That’s the most asked question I get when showing my photography. Why are there no people in your photography? Because I can’t get the same reaction from a person that I can get from a snow covered field or a crisp autumn day.

Landscape, seascape architecture. I agree w/Rick M. above who said, “I am amazed how photography has changed my perspective. Things I never noticed before I now photograph.”

I ALWAYS have my camera w/me when I’m driving around. I constantly scan the environment for my next photograph.

So yes I photograph everything but people!

  • Matt Roe Says:

I am really into architecture and urban life. I carry around my Olympus E-500 taking pictures of everything I see. Often times, I will set up my tripod and do a nice long exposure or even an HDR image.

  • Roup Hardowar Says:

I started out shooting people with landscape as the background, and then I started to shoot family members at birthday parties. As way to expand my skills, I started to shoot Landscape, architecture, Portraits, Travel, Parties, sunset, nature, and Street, almost anything that looks good in my eye.
I enjoy street photography because there is always something new to explore and shoot even the garbage on the ground in NYC.
I’m still trying to define myself on the type of photography I enjoy.

  • sunny Says:

I would classify most of my photography as nature photography. I like macro shots of flowers and bugs, but I also do alot of landscapes. Recently, I went out, while the power was out across town, to shoot the moon! My camera is a Sony CyberShot H-1, It is sort of between a point and shoot and a DSLR. I have done a bit of portraiture. I do travel photography whenever we travel. Adventure photography whenever we adventure. I just about always have my camera with me. The only waste of money in photography is the camera you don’t bring along.

  • Raquel Paladino Says:

Travel, street, close-up portraits, landscapes and seascapes are what I’m most drawn to…black and white photography and the way it is a powerful tool to capture the grittiness of real life…especially shooting in low contrast.

Check out my site at http://www.2paladinos.com

I mainly take family photography. The kids sports, holidays, birthdays, vacations, etc.

  • deuts Says:

Portrait, especially candid moments. I like to capture and explore the expressions of people around me.

  • Michael Seljos Says:

I shoot many things, but mostly scenic locations to build up my collection of stock photography. I’ve also been doing a lot of panoramas and high dynamic range (HDR) photos.

  • Carol Blacklock Says:

My favorite pictures are the ones I take of flowers and plants, mostly at Burbank Gardens in Santa Rosa, CA. Second, I like to photograph my Grandchildren doing fun and funny things.

  • Mary Says:

I capture selectively — always keeping the camera handy for anything unusual and occasionally for daily activities or nice views or objects.

  • Daniel Condurachi Says:

I do not have favorites in any domain. I do family photos, I like capturing the beautiful landscapes and to use macro on details on plants, sometimes I am invited to different events to take pictures, but I also like photographing food, especially sweets.

  • Real Women Scrap Says:

The answer is “Yes.” I like them all. Seriously, I just love to capture moments and images that I see and preserve them to share with others. I know the way I see is different than the view others have…especially clear when my DH and I photograph the same subject from such different viewpoints. If I had to choose, I would say I primarily take a photojournalistic approach to whatever I shoot—I like to capture images and people at the height of emotion. The better my photos get, the better my scrapbook pages look and I like that.

I’ve always started taking photos professionally when asked and put up a site for people to view my work. It’s still a work in progress and I care more about the emotion and capturing the moment than the technical stuff, but you can see what I’ve got going so far at http://www.tasramarphotography or on my blog at http://realwomenscrap.typepad.com. Fun stuff!

I’m an architect so mainly I’m photographing buildings and small details. Some of my photos are more abstract as I like to see composition and color more than a subject. When I actually do photograph living things it’s usually candids of people.

I take pictures at events or during trips. I look for candid shots, still life, landscapes…nothing forced…

  • Elaine Says:

I love all kinds but my true passion is shooting landscapes and macro shots of flowers. So far I use my Nikon D200 for landscape work with great success and now use my Nikon Coolpix S7c for the macro because I am not having much luck taking those shots with my D200. I am having great difficulty getting sharp closeup shots of flowers with my D200.

  • Gerrit Zwart Says:

Love to shoot animals (this of course includes people). But mainly the beautiful things in life whether this is nature, animals or people.

My main focus is nature photography.

  • citra Says:

Cause I’, still new in photography I’d like to try all kin of photography. I think when we took a photograph of something they’re have their own uniqueness

  • Billy Chia Says:

I like narrative photography. Whether it’s an event or day to day life I like my pictures to tell a story.

  • klew Says:

I carry my camera pretty much everywhere, which comes in handy when you find an interesting shot, or someone backs into your car and you want to take insurance photos immediately. However, I tend to snap loads when traveling, as friends and family tend to want to see what I can show them.

  • Vineeta Bhat Says:

I love to travel and travel photography is mostly my favorite kind of photography but since travelling has not been happening I shoot mostly Landscape and Macro. I’m also trying to get a good grip of Portrait Photography.

  • Dom Schrader Says:

I am into sports photography. Since I am a long distance runner, I mostly shoot at track races and big city runs, but not just the atheltes but also what is going on around.
Nevertheless, I would love to carry my cam around more often to catch daily szenes as well….

  • Stephen Newton Says:

I generally like taking landscapes and vistas. But I also use the camera for recording family life, events etc. Since getting this DSLR I’ve tried to have the camera with me every weekend and take something to post on Flickr each week, so sometimes I have to venture out of my comfort zone and experiment. I’m not always away to see a new landscape or at a family event.

  • Shane Says:

My camera isn’t used so much for ‘taking photographs’ so much as ‘doing experiemnts’. For the last 2-3 years I’ve been playing with websites, teaching myself everything from html through to php and css… but then the challenge wore off a bit.

So I was looking for that was both technical and artistic, like web development, to replace it. Photography has more than filled the gap!

Consequentally I take everything from street scenes, landscapes, portraits, macro, shots under different lighting etc etc etc

In saying that I do have my favorites including med/long exposures and environmental portraits.

  • Roy Says:

I take pictures of everything :-)

To quote myself from my Fotopic site:

“I take pictures of “the unseen” or “unnoticed” The details we miss in every day life; the electrical insulator, an architectural detail or an old advertisement on the side of a building.”

I also take lots of travel pictures, as can be seen here: http://travelstribulations.fotopic.net/

I take pictures of what I like, sometimes I just like to play.

I would love to take People, Macro photography mainly. I like to express emotions and things that we miss out in daily life.

My photo interests are potraits esp self, landscapes and anything creative.

I luv to experiment, i make a plot in mind of wht i wanted in the shot n try my best to get in close to that idea. But most of time i use that idea and end up something different from my original idea. It gives an immense satisfication when i see the final outcome though it worked or not. Thts how i motivate myself to experiment more.

Lately, I’ve been into fine art photography (understanding good composition) and night photography. There so much you can do with slow shutters and available light at night. I also really enjoy candid moments and shooting very ordinary things that are usually overlooked.

  • Tony Martin Says:

My photographic past has been filled with technically correct crap that you see everywhere - landscapes, people, sunsets, other things with which to fill up postcards. Over the past couple years I have been breaking into abstracts and photo-impressionism, not only thinking outside the box, but moving outside of it and as far away from it as possible.

Stop by the blog for photo of the day, essays, tutorials, thoughts, etc. http://aphotoortwo.blogspot.com.

Prior to joining DPS I shot almost exclusively nature photography, more specifically landscape scenics, wildlife, and flower macros. But now I’m trying to expand my horizons to include just about anything! Thanks DPS!

  • Ramen Junkie Says:

I’d say most of my photos are of toys for reviews I write for my blog but it’s just not true. Most of my photos are of toys though, usually just for fun.

I’d say second is animals. I love shooting photos at zoos and such.

    Ups! tough question,

I would say that I have not a favorite subject. As you can see in the referenced photostream, I mostly do still life, but I would say that I am more in the “composition” than in the snap shots.

I have a little bit of everything, people, landscape, flowers, but mostly “artistic” compositions.

I started with a company that does children’s school portraits. Since then, I have went to the pre-school division. I love getting the precious portraits of the tiny babies and then also the tooth-less grins of the older children. • Robsb Says:

I just hate this question! I belong to Nikonians and they ask the same stupid question. My photography interest is so varied that I cannot pigeon hole myself into any category. I have shot landscapes, architecture, birds, animals, macro’s, flowers, still life, insects, action (car races, rodeo’s, etc). I basically shoot anything that catches my eye right down to door handles, burned wood, whatever. This may be a good question for a professional who specializes in one type of photography like weddings, or Fashion, but for amatuers like myself, I think it is limiting.

  • Sandy W Says:

What a variation of photograghy! I have learnt heaps of tips with DPS, thanks. I am still on film, but a lot of tips still apply. My main passion is sunrises & sunsets, which I have not missed one sinse 1.1.2001.making to today, nearly 2500 days!. I also shoot landscapes, clouds, people, unusual things, lightning,(well, try to!)storms, love spiderwebs in the early morning light, leaves with dew, wildlife, & just about every type of photos I can. Even took a few sunrises from an ultralight plane!!Sinse I was given my first camera at 15 years, I have seen everything through the eye of the lens.Makes life interesting to say the least!(I am now 61years!) my web site is http://www.sunrisestosunsets.com.au

  • Elsie Says:

My primary subjects are my children, ages 11 and 8. I shoot them at our family outings, school events, extracurricular activities, and of course randomly around the house and yard.

Lately I’ve done quite a bit of indoor (i.e., low-light) action photography featuring gymnasts and belly dancers. I’d love to do more sports and theater.

Other interests that might get indulged someday when I get better equipment and more time (ha ha): flowers (close-up), architecture, and wild birds.

  • Liz Says:

I’m relatively new to photography, and got into it through shooting rock/pop concerts. I’ve branched out considerably, and am taking a product photography course now, but my favorite things to shoot are still fast-action, available light shots, especially concerts. I love capturing a moment in progress in that second before it disappears. It’s like freezing time for that one second.

  • william rodriguez Says:

The majority of what I do is landscape photography. I have done lots of portraits but sometimes models are hard to come by.
    Street photography I do occasionally.

  • Lao K Says:

I freelance for the Western Australian ‘Asia Times’ newspaper and I photograph functions/concerts when requested. Mainly I photograph young local Chinese females (friends) who just love having good photographs taken. My camera (read Moi) loves having them in the viewfinder. Such eye candy! So, my answer is portrait photography. That is why I bought a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM lens. The bokeh is superb and I favour this lens because, being an old-fart, I get hand shake looking at the pretty girls and I need something to help me keep the camera steady. LOL

  • Diana Says:

I shoot a wide variety of things, but recently I’ve been shooting A LOT of macro and nature.

  • Karese Says:

Variety is the spice of life! I look for unusual shots. I love taking nature pictures, sunsets, tons of vacation pictures, and some of my grandaughter’s pictures end up on Sunday morning slide shows for the children’s moment. I started with my Cannon AE-1 Programmable years ago and moved into the digital scene and love it. Editing programs make it even more fun and carefree.

  • Xeyn Says:

capturing the day to day life of family and friends, their visits and get togethers, street photography…whatever comes in the way of my point and shoot

  • Ajith Says:

I live (work) in Botswana and love wild life. Most of my captures are of wild life, kids school events and sports, landscapes and my wifes cakes (birthday, wedding ect). Until begining of July this year I had a canon EOS 300 film camera and now I have a 400D and eagerly waiting for my next camping trip to capture some wild life.

  • Douglas Says:

I just love sports and bird life. but as a beginner i have lots to learn, my efforts are aided with a Canon 400D and 24-105mm lens with stabiliser. Would love some advice as to obtaining decent results when shooting live shots inside a theatre, some are plays - Pantomines- others are musical presentations. Problem is we are not allowed to use flash at any time. I appreciate the digital school.
    All Regards & Thanks

  • Chris Kaszubski Says:

    Hi :)
Firstly, I would like to thank you for the wonderful service you provide, I have learnt quite a few tricks as a result.

I personally am a very curious person and since buying my camera a year ago have had a tilt at abstract, street, wedding / event, motorsport, architectural, landscape, film stills, documentary, band ( gig ) and night photography.
They all require different approaches and skills, which I’ve discovered as I went along.
Haven’t really settled on a style yet, still experimenting.

  • Hao Says:

I like taking landscape and street photographs when travel and I also like taking photos of not only cakes but all dishes/food when photograhing at functions.

  • Nancy Williamson Says:

I do a lot of people unaware shots, especially of my daughter and her son. I love catching them doing something fun, that brings smiles later and prompts fond memories of the event. I use both film and digital cameras sometimes of the same events. Memories and discussion enhance a 4 year old’s communication skills and produce meaningful hugs. My cameras are for my fun.

  • ILuvNUFC Says:

I’m very much an amateur and I use a point and shoot camera.

Lightning Photography (It’s very relaxing, and since it is around 40 degrees Celsius around here, dancing in the rain is going on holiday)

  • andy Says:

I have always enjoyed shooting scenery, especially with water somehow in it. Also macro of bugs, flowers, and things. And really spectacular sunrises and sunsets. I am terrible at shooting people so i avoid it, although i did a candid shoot of a friends wedding that they said they enjoyed my album that i gave them better than the pro’s. Just a little pat on my back.

  • Robin Barlow Says:

I tend to shoot anything and everything. roses from my back yard (that I use as screen savers), birds, the clouds in the sky, tree bark, our dog.. I especially love to take photos of family….when my sister’s and their families get together there are about 25 to 27 of us and everyone is free game..so I tend to bring things to add interest to our camping memories one year we did those big red wax lips and everyone got their pictures with those, we had a bubble gum blowing contest( I brought 3 big bags of bubble gum) to see who could get the biggest bubble even the ones that had popped on the faces were funny, that was something that the whole family got involved in even the adults those are genuine smiles…that really capture the fun that we had …I really would like to take better close ups of waterskiing, wake boarding, tubing, more action shots in multiple shots, and babies.. also like to take any shots of any gatherings weddings, birthdays, baby showers..and I have recently decided to start to take a photo a day. my friends know that I will bring my camera..I tend to take more pictures because when I was growing up my parents didn’t take that many family photos so I tend to document everything.

  • skykid Says:

I like street photography and portraits more than anything else - but these days am shooting mainly landscapes .

  • Jolene Says:

I have done many candid shots of children. Most are from a distance away while they play. They can be so funny without knowing they are being watched! I have done some hospital shots of newborns that the parents thanked me later for. They didn’t like the hospital photos, and gave everyone the shots I had taken of their newborn instead.
Pregnancy shots of women’s belly’s have also been a favorite for me.
I recently started taking trips around my area capturing worn out church buildings, 100 year old school houses, irrigation watering rainbows, farm tractors, and even macro shots of tree frogs the kids and I have found in our back yard.
I dabble in a little bit of everything, but have found myself getting the MOST satisfaction from the candid shots of children. Black and white images are a favorite of mine, or black & white shots with a touch of color enhancement somewhere in them. Parents have loved the results of these images as well.
Finding your site has been such a blessing! I have learned so much more here than I have anywhere else on the web. My daughter has picked up my old digital camera (shes 6 years old) and began shooting along side of me. Shes so proud of her work. When shes older, I hope to use your site to help encourage her with photography also.
    Thanks so much!

I love taking sports and macro shots, trying also to use the macro lens as a portrait lens. I do a lot of social events where I live and also try to get mining site shots.

  • Becky McGuire Says:

My favorite is macro. I take lots of pictures of flowers,
shells, etc. Being a travel agent I take lots of travel photos and being the Mother of six and Grandmother of thirteen I take tons of family pictures.

  • Ursula Says:

I love taking all kinds of pictures and have not found anything yet that I want to specialize in. Though a friend of mine who has a flower shop likes me to take pictures when she sets up an event. She wants pictures before the bridal party gets there and I have done a few jobs for her. She loves the pictures that come out of my new DSLR a Canon Rebel XTi 400D. Though my Kodak Z7590 point and shoot camera does a pretty good job too but it only has 5 mega pixels and it has a fixed lens. She also likes me to take pictures of the bridal bouquet and other flowers that she does for events and adds them later to her port folio. I would like to do some Weddings but feel not quite comfortable with my new camera yet and I will have to get some more equipment like lights and umbrellas etc etc with stands. I know that in the beginning I will only be able to do weddings where the future couple only has a low budged for this part of their wedding. But that is ok it is a way to learn while working. I do take my camera with me almost everywhere I go just in case something comes along that is worth taking a picture of.

  • Ursula Says:

I forgot to mention that I am a floral designer and will take pictures of all my arrangements in the higher price range where I can really be artistic. The nice thing is that wedding pictures and flowers are related. Many times a bride has asked me of a close up shot of the bouquet because her photographer forgot.

  • Becky McGuire Says:

I love macro photography with flowers my favorite subject.
I am a travel agent so I have lots of travel photos as well.
I have 14 grandchildres so I takes lots of photos of them.
