Weekly Assignment

By Gayle

Last weekend we announced the winners of our first mini-contest. This past week, the turnout was even greater. Our weekly assignment was Music, and we had some fantastic entries. People showed us many different interpretations of music, from instruments to bands, from iPods to records, we saw how many different ways music could be interpreted. Our winner for the music theme was Gayle with her picture of her husband playing the guitar. We had so many great entries this week that we picked 3 honourable mentions. Our honourable mentions go to tomoy for his emphasis on the baseline, Susan for her guitar image that mirrors her own image, and finally to Celeste for her picture of an old record player, reminding us how music used to be played.

Our newest assignment is transport. Planes, trains, automobiles. If it gets you around, then take a picture and post it in the assignment thread. Don’t forget to put Assignment:Transport in your post and post before Tuesday in order to be in the mini-contest. Next week, watch for our assignment on Time.

Weekly Poll

Week 3 PollThis week, we asked people over at the forum whether they print at home or have their photos professionally printed. The results were some of the closest we’ve had. But professional printers still won out.

Scink said “You will find when working with a lab that specifically works with professional photographers, you will get a much higher quality product. Also, the price is marginally different than that of the cheap places.”

Still, there’s something to be said for printing at home since so many of us do it.

Teewinot said “If I had to choose, I’d print myself. I already almost exclusively print my own photos with my Epson r300. It’s not a top of the line model, but prints vivid glossies up to 8.5X11 and it’s perfect for personal wall hangings and gifts. I also have so much more control…if the photo comes out wrong (color is off or something), I can simply make the changes and re-print.”

Come vote on this week’s poll question and tell us if you could only shoot in the middle of the day or the middle of the night, which would you choose?

Not sure I’ve ever had an honourable mention in my life! Thank you - I’m very chuffed indeed. Glad you liked my picture - it was great fun to shoot to order as it were. Well done to everyone else to - some lovely stuff was posted and great to get such variety of styles too. I will definitely take part in future assignments - it’s just really nice to be forced into thinking about how you interpret a subject. I’m on my way out to do transport now. Thanks again and happy shooting everyone.
