Earlier today I had a reader ask me for a recommendation for a book on Photoshop. I decided to poll 10 of my good photographer buddies on their recommendations and they came up with the following Photoshop books:
1. The Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers
2. Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac: The Missing Manual
3. Photoshop Elements 6 For Dummies
1. The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers
2. Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers
3. Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book
1. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers
2. Layers: The Complete Guide to Photoshop’s Most Powerful Feature
3. Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching

It’s a great book and a real eye-opener.

Scott Kelby’s Photoshop Elements book is great. It’s like a cookbook with step by step instructions on how to achieve a particular result.

Thanks very much for this post. I am sold on Kelby books. Upon reading this post, I immediately purchased Kelby’s Photoshop Elements 6.0 book.

I would definitely add to that list the “7 point system for Adobe Photoshop Cs3″. I think it is Kelby’s best PS book ever (for photographers, at least).

Photoshop Masking and Compositing by Katrin Eismann is amazing. It is the ultimate how do I select this object book!

I have recently purchased Tim Grey’s “Photoshop CS3 Workflow” which I find a very easy and informative read. It doesn’t introduce you to all the tools in CS3, but it’s a great book to get yourself familiarized with the basics and get you into a pattern of steps when you begin your editing procedures.
I plan on picking up Kelby’s book on CS3 once I finish getting introduced to the basics.

I’ll second Laro’s opinion on The 7 Point System by Kelby. It breaks PS/CS3 down to the most effective, essential and relevant processes that can and do take that dull or unenriched shot into “KA-BLAM”. Good book. Great book.

I’d have to second the suggestions of any of Scott Kelby’s books, but also highly recommend Matt Kloskowski’s ‘Layers’ book - brilliant!

I’ve been using Photoshop for a number of years but most the books were just too dry and technical. I just bought the latest book called “How To Cheat In Photoshop CS3″ 4 edition by Steve Caplin. The author provides a lot of tips and tricks used by the pros. This book comes with lots of illustrations as well as a DVD with video illustrations. I have to add that some of the video’s didn’t play at all but you can download the corrected videos from the website. You can check it out by going to http://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com. This is an excellent book and I’ve learned more in the 1st 3 chapters from any other book I’ve read and I do have a few. I must add that it helps to have some experience in Photoshop to make things easier. This book is posible the very latest book on the market and may not have made most store shelves yet. I ordered mine through Amazon.
If you are using version CS2 I recommend getting “The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers” by Scott Kelby. It has great illustrations with out a lot of technical data but does not come with a CD or DVD.

In answer to the “9 Hot Paintshop Pro Books” I don’t think you would find 9 unless you go back to version 7,8,9 or 10 but here are 4 on version X1 & X2. I would recomend ones by Ken McMahon from Focal Press, all avaiable for Aamzon at reasonble prices.
Picture Yourself Learning Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 by Diane Koers
Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 for Photographers by Ken McMahon (this is one of the Focal press books and are very good) and
Paint Shop Pro XI for Photographers by Ken McMahon
Corel Paint Shop Pro X Digital Darkroom by T. Michael Clark
