Backyard Photography Challenge
Yesterday we posted an article about Backyard photography – today I’d like to issue a challenge – get into your backyard and see what shots you can come up with – and then share your best shot or two with us in comments below.
I know some of you don’t technically have ‘backyards’ – but feel free to photograph whatever is the closest thing to a yard for you (a balcony for instance) – be creative. You don’t just have to take a picture of your yard – focus in on something (or someone) in it. I’m expecting to see macro work, wildlife, pets, portraits and much much more!
Once you’ve gotten out there and taken some shots – pick your favorite one or two, upload them to our favorite photosharing site (like Flickr) and share a link to your shots in the comments section below.
Please only link to pictures you’ve taken for this challenge and not previous ones – that way we’re seeing your most recent work.
Also – we’d love it if you’d link to this post from your photosharing page to let your friends know what you’re doing – that’ll spread news of our little challenge and make it all the more fun!
I can’t see what everyone comes up with!

I take a lot of pictures in my backyard because it’s conveniently located and it challenges me to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. Now whether I actually find it is debatable, but still fun.

I spend a bit of time in my garden landscaping it, planting flowers and shrubs so it is a nice place to be. Yet the entire green area is ruined by an ugly clothes line that spins around in the wind. Photo the line in my backyard / back garden here. http://www.flixel.net/general/evening-peg/

After returning from a day of outdoor shooting, I was unloading my equipment when I noticed a Pepsis Wasp (aka: Tarantula Hawk) dragging a large spider it had subdued across my driveway … which is technically in my backyard! I had to shoot fast trying to manually focus with a 300mm “macro” lens, but this shot turned out kind of … “colorfully frightening”, is the best descriptions I can think of for it. (Look up “Pepsis Wasps” if you want to know why the wasp was dong battle with the spider.)

Thanks Alison for your comments. Actually it’s more like an aviary around here sometimes, but no, it is just an ordinary Australian backyard with some trees and many more in the neighbourhood. The “regulars” are crows, peewees, myna birds (both Indian and Noisy), kookaburras, and if they stay still in the one place long enough, lorrikeets (they really are “neurotic” birds, but beautiful). This is my collection of bird images on flickr, most from our backyard, but a few from around Brisbane:

This is one of my favorites from my backyard. I caught the family on the swingset one evening….a slow shutter provided a nice blurring of the action against the lights of the house.

Backyard photography is a lot of fun, especially if you let mother nature help you. Photos of flowers and bees or butterflys. Pictures of vegetable plants in bloom such as tomato vines. I enjoy watching my flowers in bloom and the macro photographing them. Check out my photos on Woophy.com, photojoe…
Thanks

We put out food to attract the local bird life as the rainbow lorikeets and others are so colourfull to us migrants from NZ. I was kinda shocked one morning to see this big fulla (or fulless) out the back. I’m amazed that the little table did not fall off the tree. The birds of Australia are truly amazing.

here is a shot off my balcony overlooking the lake one evening. I knew of the launch time from the NASA website and set the camera to ISO 500, F/4.5 and opened the shutter when I saw the rocket over 150miles away! I closed the shutter 134secs later when i thought the exposure might be too great. It turned out just right!

Hi!
I took a few photos in my backyard and from all of them I have selected this one so far. I’m a newbie in photography so comments would be gladly received.
I call it “Old Flowers” because the flowers… well… they look kind of old :D

Hi!!
“Backyard” phot called Abandoned BBQ.
Used the canon eos rebel Xt.
ISO 400
1/60, F6.3.
Found a new website to help edit. Picasa. Did the color center, black and white and then soft focus.
My 2nd post, hope that I am doing this right and that everyone enjoys the challenge.

I’m new to this site but already in love~ I’m just beginning to get handy with my new canon rebel xsi; these are two of my favorite shots from my backyard in Detroit. I took the pic of the spider at night in the dark so I had to use a flash, and although she let me get within a couple inches of her I didn’t know how to turn the flash down and that’s as close as I could get without overexposure. On the other hand, a little distance allowed for the web to be in the shot as well.

To Elizabeth Blackwell
You should have that old tub sandblasted at a local monument company and re porcelain. People pay good money for those tubs. do your research in your area first. My daughter-in-law paid about a $100 dollars for a tub and then had it re porcelain. By the way good pics!! Shutter Happy
