Weekly Assignment

Things got noisy for this week’s assignment which was Sound / Noise. We had a real variety of shots, but what made us pick the ones we did was most often because of the way that it really showed off sounds and the impact of those sounds. Our winner this week was rt80639’s “Colour of Sound” this was an excellent example of how the sound from speakers can be used creatively. While you might not be able to “hear” the sound in this one, it wouldn’t be possible without it. In case you missed the writeup last week, rt. also explains just how he took it. Our first runner up was Evil_Banana’s “The Sound of SIlence”. If you don’t have the guitar plugged in, no matter how much you play, you aren’t going to hear much. This shot had really good depth of field, and it was clear that there was no sound, but as we all know sometimes silence itself is very powerful. Although this was the opposite of noise, we all know that silence can have a sound of it’s own. And last, but not least was TTHW’s Mixer. The light on the spinning beaters gives a real sense of motion, and if you’ve used a mixer in the kitchen you’re almost certainly able to hear that whirr even with just a photo. Congrats to all of this week’s winners, and best of luck to everyone in the next assignment.

Throw you camera in the air cause it’s time to play with Kinetics. Ok, you don’t have to throw your camera (you can if you’re brave), you can also play with zooming your lens during the exposure or otherwise moving your camera. The point of the assignments is to challenge you in your photography and help teach you new things. Move beyond snapshots and show us something creative and unique. Before you head off to post your Kinetics photos though, a quick reminder of the rules. First, your photo must have been taken between 11-25 November 2009. Your post must include the words “Assignment: Kinetics” and the date the photo was taken. Your EXIF should be intact and it’s useful if you can include some of the main points (e.g. camera, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc). Next week’s assignment has two possible parts to it. The next assignment (which will be posted on 25 November) depends on your gear. If you have a 50mm lens (or a lens that can be set to 50mm), the assignment is to shoot something for which you’re thankful and do so at 50mm. If you can’t set your camera to 50mm, then just take a photo of something that you’re thankful for.

Strobist: Show us how you took it?: If you haven’t heard of Strobist, it’s all about getting your light off camera. But when you’re just starting with off camera lighting, how do you know what is the “right” way to position your lights? Whether you’re a dedicated strobist or you’re just curious about how to light, come look at this thread to learn about lighting setups and contribute your own.

Flash Gun… Do you really need one?: Photography is all about light and capturing it. But does that mean that you must use a flash or is natural light enough? If you’re a strobist, well, then more likely than not you probably consider any light you can get your hands on, natural or otherwise as available light. Come add your 2 cents to the discussion of if and when you need more than just the naturally available light.

And nobody wants to spend all kinds of money on a lens without some idea of what they’re getting. And sometimes you just want to try out a lens for one time purpose, what do you do then? That’s when lens rentals become very useful. But which sites are good for renting lenses and cameras? Come share your experiences in this thread.

Spell Shot: One of the popular games on the forum this week is Spell Shot. This thread challenges you to spell out a word using the photo’s subject. So, if the word were EYE, the first person may post a photo of an Elephant, the second, a Yak, and the third, an ELK. Jump on over to the forum to find out what word is currently being spelled and see how you can join in the fun.

What Would You Do: Each week we have a post-processing challenge in the forums which gives you the opportunity to edit someone else’s photo. This week we wanted you to show us photos that represented the troubled economy. Our winner this week was bmjesus’s dropping coins. The depth of field in this shot was very effective with a strong focus on the coins, and the movement of the coins was nicely captured. One of the things that stood out in this shot was the human aspect of it and the sense of despair that it conveyed. Our first runner up was BryanC’s Beaten Dollar. This photo was one that stood out not necessarily because of the photo, but because of the idea and the post-processing that brought that idea into reality. It is a creative idea, and it also interjects a bit of humor in a sometimes dark situation. Last, but not least was was gapsoteric’s A Question that Nobody Can Answer. The woman in this shot was begging for coins in a bus terminal in the Philippines. The shot grabbed our attention and puts a takes an emotional look at what can happen during an economic downturn.

The challenge is to display an audio medium in a visual format… not something that is easily done. In case you’re new to the assignments or you just need a reminder of the rules, there are only a few to remember. First, the photos for this week’s assignment must have been taken between 4-18 November 2009. Second, your post must include the date the photo was taken and either “Assignment: Sound” or “Assignment: Noise”. And finally, your EXIF should be intact and it’s useful if you can include some of the main points (e.g. camera, lens, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, etc.). Next week’s assignment will be Kinetics. For the assignment the moving part of your photo should be your camera. Zoom the lens, move the camera in your hands, and if you’re really brave, you can even throw the camera in the air. Good luck!

We got to see some very interesting parts of buildings that we wouldn’t normally see. Our winner this week was kurtwall’s Stucco and Beam. This shot really captured the idea of the assignment with looking at the details and showing how the details don’t have to be grandiose in order to catch our eye. The stucco gave the image a nice texture and the wood added to the warmth. Our first runner up was Boscopix’s BMW World. This picture of two lights on a corner showcased how the shadows and lines created an interesting detail. The photo had very nice contrast and the simplicity really showed off the detail well. And last but not least was crockny’s Horse on Horse. This shot was really well considered and well executed. The architectural detail was captured well by showing the horse in the window in the foreground and the out of focus carrousel horse in the background, further accentuating the horse concept.

This week our assignment focuses on The Economy. We know that times are tough everywhere, so why not use this as an opportunity to challenge yourself to show the concept of a troubled economy through your photography. As always, a quick reminder of the rules if you want to enter the contest to have your photo featured on the blog. Your photo must have been taken between 28 October – 11 November 2009. You must include the words “Assignment: The Economy” and the date that the photo was taken. Finally, your EXIF should be intact and it’s useful if you can include some of the main points (e.g. camera, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO). Next week’s assignment will be “Sound”.

Ghosts, goblins and things that go bump in the night were a common theme in our Scary or Spooky assignment. There were definitely some scary and spooky entries this week but we had a very clear winner with this week’s votes. The winner this week was Murtasma’s Skeletor shot. This elaborate costume was both scary and well done. Our first runner up was a_brewley’s “Thing under the bed”. She took this shot while her daughter was asleep! Thank goodness she didn’t wake up. One thing we learned from this shot was that lots of us mods were scared of finding things under the bed as kids. It was gritty and scary and all kinds of film noir and probably a few of us found ourselves checking for things under the bed again (definitely click on the image to see the detail in it since the thumbnail doesn’t do it justice). And last, but not least was SNOOPY’s spooky black cat. While not as scary as our other winners, the black cat is classic halloween and the detail captured in both the fur and eyes was amazing. Congrats to all of this week’s winners and best of luck to everyone in the next assignment.

Sometimes buildings have some great architectural details that we miss out on because we’re so concerned with capturing the bigger picture. But this week we want you to focus on some of those smaller details. As usual, a quick reminder of the rules for those of you who want to enter the weekly assignment competition. First, your photo must have been taken between 21 October – 4 November 2009. Second, your post must include the words “Assignment: Architectural Detail” and the date the photo was taken. Finally, your EXIF should be intact and it’s useful if you can include some of the main information (e.g. camera, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc). You’ll need to head over to the Assignments area of the forum to enter. Next week’s assignment will be “The Economy” so start shooting.

Windows can create frames, be part of the background or even be the subject of a photo. You can be looking out, looking in, or looking through, but the use of windows can add a new dimension to your photos. Our winner this week was cheesee’s “Jail”. There was something about this photo that kept drawing us back in. Maybe the composition, maybe the tones, or maybe just the human element and the way it looked like she was reaching out towards us. Our first runner up was makaio14’s “I’m blown’ this popsicle stand!” which was another creative look at escaping out the window. The shot was fun and different and really made use of the window as an element of the photo. The window really helps to create the story in this shot. And last, but not least was SNOOPY’s old “Cowshed Window” which gave us a look back in time to a 100 year old cow shed where the cows were still milked by hand.

As usual a quick reminder of the rules. Your photo must have been taken between 14-28 October 2009. Second, you must include the words “Assignment: Scary or Spooky” in your post and you must include the date the photo was taken. And it showed just how useful the out of focus parts of your photo can be in creating a pleasing composition. Our winner this week was djwl’s Blue Gerbera. The simplicity and monochromatic tones created a very pleasing image that was just simply beautiful. We really liked the vivid colours and sparkling dew. The simple curves and effective use of similar tones created a very pleasing shot. And last, but not least was kgtyamar’s Squares and Bokehs. The use of opposing colours and shapes created a very interesting shot that was really very fun. The composition was nice and the shapes really played against each other well. Congrats to this week’s winners!

But remember what you’ve learned in the past with lighting, composition, and settings and apply it when you’re shooting windows. As usual, a quick run down of the rules for the assignment. First, your photo must have been taken between 7 – 21 October 2009. Second, your post must include the date the photo was taken and the words “Assignment: Windows”. And finally, your EXIF should be intact and it’s useful if you can include the main points (camera, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc). Next week’s assignment will be Scary or Spooky. Halloween is coming up so try to come up with something that will give us a bit of a fright. Good luck!

We were surprised with the varied things that people collected, but our winners this week pulled off photographing their collections in a way that really made them stand out. Our winner this week was eBomb’s collection of Chuck Taylors. The shot was quirky and amusing and it had a nicely balanced composition as well as making good use of the square format. The bare feet added some additional interest as well. The colours really stood out. Our first runner up was summernc22’s brush collection. What we liked about this one was that it had a nice abstract look to it. As painters know, it’s entirely possible to collect brushes and the abstract nature of this one really gave them a new look. And last, but not least was multilane’s elephants. Although the colours were simply and understated, the background that was used gave it the illusion that the elephants were walking around outside. It was also clear that a lot of work was put into arranging the elephants in a pleasing way. Well done everyone!

Our current assignment is Bokeh. A quick reminder of the assignment rules for those of you who are new to the assignments or who are wondering what they need to do to participate. First, your photo must have been taken between 30 September – 14 October. Next, your post must include the words “Assignment: Bokeh” and the date that the photo was taken to show that it is a valid entry. And last, but not least, your EXIF should be intact and it’s helpful if you can include the main points in your post (e.g. camera, lens, aperture, ISO, shutter speed). Next week’s assignment will be Windows. This is another challenge where it’s up to you do make an ordinary object into something extraordinary.

The use of shadows can add depth and dimension to a shot, or even an entirely new element. Our winner this week was fbroschart’s Eggs and Whisk. This shot was an easy favorite among the judges this week. The way the shadows on the eggs mimicked the shapes on the plate, combined with the curves of the egg created a great shot. But not only that, the shot made great use of depth of field, contrast, and composition. Our first runner up was duna’s Fabric Ceiling. While the shot nearly has the look of leaves, it was actually a fabric ceiling at Denver International Airport. The shadows really helped to add dimension to this image and create an almost abstract shot that focused on shape and tone. And last, but not least was tj6016’s Killer Shadow. We’ve all seen the horror movies where you see the shadow coming up behind the victim, well tj6016 put that theme to good use and used the shadows to create a story, showing just how effectively shadows can change a shot.

Most of us collect something, whether it’s seashells, coins, or dust, we want you to show us your collections in a creative and interesting way. As usual, a reminder of the assignment rules. First, your photo must have been taken between 23 September -7 October 2009. Second, your post must include the words “Assignment: Collections” and the date that the photo was taken, otherwise we will not include it in our considerations. Finally, the EXIF should be intact and it’s useful if you can include some of the main points (e.g. camera, lens, ISO, shutter speed, and aperture) in the body of your post. Next week’s assignment will be Bokeh which is the out of focus area in your image when you use a shallow depth of field.

Contrast can be found in visual design in colour as well as black and white, and it can also be found in textures and subjects. Our winner this week was villafane928’s Cowboy shot. The black and white of this shot had excellent contrast. The deep blacks in the shirt and pants along with the dark hair really made the subject stand out. Our first runner up was another black and white shot. beverlykaytw’s Walking up the Hill had a nice balance between the land and the sky and also brought the dark and light together creating a sense of contrasting parts of the land and contrast in the black and white. Our final runner up was madfox1’s Pencil shot. With this shot there were several kinds of contrast. The red and green are contrasting colours on the colour wheel. Then the different black and white patterns provided contrast between each other. The overall shot really just caught our eyes.

When we take our shots we often want to eliminate shadows. But shadows can also be a powerful element in the composition of a photograph. There’s only one extra rule for this assignment: No pictures of your shadow on the ground (too easy!). In the mean time, our standard rules for the contest apply. You must take your photo between 16 – 30 September 2009. You must include the date the photo was taken and the words “Assignment: Shadows” in your post. And the EXIF should be intact and it’s useful if you can include some of the main points in your post (e.g. Camera, lens, ISO, aperture, white balance, etc). Next week’s assignment will be Collections.

I have to say, this assignment had a lot of really high quality entries and it was great seeing the level of creativity. Our winner this week was Nathan deGargoyle’s Seven Faces of Sin. He didn’t just show us one, but all seven in a striking, imaginative, and slightly scary approach to this week’s theme. Our first runner up was Ali QJo’s photo for pride, when your love of self becomes more important than anything else. The crisp black and white along with a good use of negative space created a really effective shot. And last, but not least was mseigafuse’s wrathful film noir shot. This shot had nice lighting and a good depth of field and successfully combined the film noir style with the theme and we could tell that a lot of thought went into crating the shot.

We also started our Contrast. Contrast can be used in a number of ways to create an effective image. It can be used in contrasting colours, contrast in the image, or contrasting elements. As usual, if you would like to participate in the weekly assignment, there are a few rules to note. First, your image must have been taken between 9 – 22 September 2009. Next, your post must include the words “Assignment: Contrast” and the date the photo was taken. If these are not included your photo will not be considered in the voting phase. Finally, your EXIF should be intact and it’s useful if you can include some of the main data from the image (e.g. camera, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO). Next week’s assignment will also relate to contrast, but our next assignment is Shadows, which we often try to eliminate through the use of extra lighting.
