Artificial Light: Weekly Photography Challenge
This week your photography challenge is to take and share an image with the theme of ‘artificial light’. This is an opportunity for you to experiment with some kind of lighting that is not ‘natural’. Whether it be the popup flash on your camera, a speedlight flash, off camera flash, studio lights or even lights around your home (lamps, christmas lights, candles, torches, sparklers, car lights etc) – take a shot that is artificially lit in some way and share it in comments below.
The subject matter can be pretty much anything – as long as there’s some element of artificial light in it – let your imagination run wild!
Once you’ve taken your best “Artificial Light” image, upload it to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it below or embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so. Please note it sometimes takes us a while to approve comments with images as there’s a moderation queue – particularly over the weekend.
If you tag your photo on Flickr, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag it as #DPSFRAMING to help others find it. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.
PS: don’t forget to check out some of the great photos shared last week in the ‘Framing’ challenge.

I’m quite preoccupied with a lot of stuff at the moment, but I did some CLS shoots in the past, using off-camera flash.
they are quite amateurish, because I’ve only learnt to do it by trial and error, and not under instruction of a seasoned or pro photographer.
You can see some of my CLS self-portraits here:
http://ihsankhairir.blogspot.com/2009/11/cls-camwhoring.html
Another impromptu CLS session by the beach, with my friends as the subject:

I hope some professional or expert photographers can give feedback on these shots. Thanks!

I broke my ankle last winter and made a photo of my bandadged leg. But just for fun I fired my Nikon SB-600 speedlight off-camera to get the light off to the side to add drama (well actually just silly fun). Used the SU-800 wireless commmander on the hotshoe of my D60 to trigger the speedgun. Then I mirrored the image just to see what that would look like and discovered that it had an eerie similarity to a poster for the original “Alien” movie. So I emblished that theme a bit more and took a photo of my face with the SB-600 under my chin and pasted that in there as well. Just felt like being weird since I wasn’t able to do much of anything else at the time. Perhaps the vicodin played a role as well :Þ

My other favorite from this camping trip. These are NOT my best photos in general…. but we were laughing soo hard, so I love them.

This is my son, arguing with himself. We did a long exposure, using an flash that I operated off camera, flashing him twice. He’s using a glow stick to fence with himself.

I had a vision of myself standing outside, in the snow or rain with my coat on, lighting a cigarette. It was a shot I wanted to try for awhile but I was tired of waiting for the snow and/or rain so I set up my gear inside and did it this way:
Feisol-mounted D700 with Nikon 24-70 2.8 lens. I set the ISO to 200 to minimize noise, as I knew much of the photo was going to be black or very dark. I had my aperture set at f/11 in order to have sharpness throughout the photo and my shutter speed (after several test shots) turned out to be 1/50th of a second for optimal results.
I stood in the dark with a cigarette in my mouth and an SB-600 unit in my hands, turned down to 1/3rd power so as to not overpower my face. This needed to resemble a lighter so I covered the front of the SB unit with a ‘Full-Cut’ CTO gel which gave it the orange glow. Also in my hand was my remote trigger which fired the camera…
I’ll eventually try this in the snow or rain but, for now, this will hold me over…
