50mm Focal Length: Weekly Photography Challenge - Digital Photography School

50mm Focal Length: Weekly Photography Challenge

7We’ve written many times about why we like 50mm lenses here on dPS (for example here, here and here) and every time we do we get a heap of readers telling us that they love them too.

So this week your photographic challenge is to take and share an image taken with a 50mmm lens (or if you don’t have one – taken at around the 50mm mark on your zoom lens).

Feel free to take any kind of photo – just make sure you’re shooting at 50mm!

Once you’ve taken your 50mm photo upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPS50mm to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Low Light challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

Taken with my Nikon d80. I love my 50mm for just about everything, but especially portraits.

I use a Nikon D60 which has a 1.6 factor due to its sensor size. My question is, on my 18-55mm lens, do I use setting of 30mm which will take effective focal length to about 50mm (30x1.6=48) or do I set it on 50mm which will make it effectively 80mm (50x1.6=80)?

This is a bunch of firsts for me, but I thought I'd take a shot (my first photo pun). First time learning how to take proper pictures, with my own (first) DSLR, with my first Flickr account to upload it here, and my first time showing one of my pictures on this site. Hope I did this right.

I have a question about the emails with the Weekly Challenge. I received my email at 11am on July 4th. When I opened it at 11:34am on July 4th, I found over 100 replies to the challenge, with dates starting on June 29th.

What happened to cause this? Is the Weekly Challenge started a week earlier in Australia or other parts of the world? I don't quite understand this. Please explain.

Thanks for a wonderful service of this weekly newsletter! I enjoy it very much and am learning a lot from it!

What a joy to use the nifty fifty. The Canon 1.8 has to be one of the best bargains available. For the challenge I blended two 50mm shots.

I just got back from a trip to San Antonio for an education conference. The only lens I took with me was my 50mm because of its versatility in low light situations. The San Antonio set I uploaded can be found here: https://secure.flickr.com/photos/teachaboy/sets/72157634334430774/
