13 Fabulous Photos of a Rainy Day

“rain” from cunyadenki
The following post highlighting some great ‘rain photography was submitted by DPS reader Martin Gommel from the blog KWERFELDEIN.
13 fabulous photos with rain – with these pictures, I would like to give you a little inspiration to do some photography on rainy days. Many people’s first thought when they see it raining is to put their camera away – however Stormy and rainy days are some of the biggest chances to shoot moody atmospheric images.
People struggling with the wind, wrestling with umbrellas, obscuring the face with their jacket, jumping or running around like they are being chased by blood-sucking aliens…. I tell you : When it really rains down you have an exciting and rare theater right before you waiting to be shot by a photographer!
So I encourage to to search for a place that gives you a good angle to shoot and that covers your head AND your camera and start shooting!
That’s it for now. Now I’ll leave you with some of best pictures with rain that the web has ever seen. Let’s get inspired!

“rain stroll” from jaxting

“Rain in Cracow” from quizz

“A walk in the rain” from marcelgermain

“-” from +lyn

“English Summer” from Lady Vervaine

“cold rain” from Idle Type

“out of the rain” from glitter darkstar

“Let it Rain” from Kenny Maths

“Vampire Season” from Annadriel

“let the rain kiss you” from maggie’s world

I love your shots! I totally agree with you about not putting away the camera when it rains. Would you mind explaining a little more what shutter speed, ISO and aperture you used to take this photos?
March 26th, 2008 at 1:17 am
Beautiful photos Martin. At first thought shooting in the rain will seem unappealing to many I’m sure, but as you’ve shown with these great images it is a prime time to get some very dramatic photographs. Now I’m looking forward to some spring rain here to take advantage of :)
March 26th, 2008 at 1:18 am
Wonderful assortment of inspiring rain photos. I like collections like this as a motivation to get me out and try to capture photos under similar conditions.
March 26th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Thank you for this post. These are all truly inspirational images.
March 26th, 2008 at 2:17 am
I’m willing to bet that none of these were taken with a point and shoot. Except perhaps the last one, of the pebbles.
March 26th, 2008 at 2:26 am
I have to respond to M’s comment…the vast majority of these shots could easily have been taken with a point-and-shoot, some with post-processing and others without. Shots 5-7, 9, 11, and 13 could all have been shot with a mid-level P&S without any post-processing.
March 26th, 2008 at 2:57 am
Thanks Craig. That’s true. I looked at them again and I do have some pictured similar to 5-7. But with 9, the eery green effect is definitely due to some photshopping or filters (gasp). Nonetheless, it’s very hard to get a professional photographer to give good advice on which P&S to get. I’ve been laughed away, kicked, punch, set on fire, chased with a cactus laced with tabasco, and I still have not been able to get a pro-tographer to give me good advice on P&S. It’s like us Mac users. Whenever a Windows user says there’s something wrong with their machine, the first thing we’d do is laugh. Then we say “obviously” and we end with “just get a mac”.
March 26th, 2008 at 3:27 am
These photos are great. I love shooting in the rain, and walking in it which is just as well.
March 26th, 2008 at 3:55 am
Beautiful…makes me want to go shoot some rain!!
March 26th, 2008 at 4:00 am
M,
Ha! Obviously. Just get a DSLR.
Just kidding. I have a canon powershot digital elph that I love. Its an old 4.0 MP, but I’ve taken some (in my opinion) fantastic shots with it! I think many will agree when I say this: A good carpenter never blames his tools. Its not exactly what you have, but how you use it. Is a rolls royce better for driving me to the store than a dodge dart? No, both get me there and carry my groceries back, one just cost a hell of a lot more.
I think I’m just going to continue with metaphors and similar situations. I’m on a roll now. Many friends of mine have asked me, “what kind of guitar should I buy?” My reply is always the same, “whichever one sounds best to you.” Music is a lot like photography in that its a very personal art. I don’t claim to be a pro-tographer at all, so take this as you will. Just go into stores with floor models and try them out. Buy one that allows you to return it after 30 days if you don’t like it. I don’t think anyone but you can finally make the decision on what camera is right for you.
And now I step down off my pedestal.
Cheers,
Brian

Here’s link with with some good information on P&S cameras if you’re interested, I ran across this the other day.

But I agree with the above, it’s not the camera that makes the photo, it’s the photographer.
Enjoy,

Thanks for showing these. I’m going to Scotland next month so will likely get my share of rain!
March 26th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Thanks all for your kind comments ! Good to see some conversation going on here on DPS !
March 26th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
johnd – the point is stated fairly clearly in the introduction and seems to have been achieved looking at everyone else’s comments.
This type of post is semi-regularly included at DPS. It’s not a ‘filler’ but an opportunity for us as a community to look over some different images around a theme and get a little inspiration for our own photography. While it may not be up everyone’s alley neither is having purely theoretical posts.
Ultimately, what ‘clogs’ up your RSS feed is not something that we here at DPS can determine – I presume if your feed reader is like mine you have the option to unsubscribe at any time. While we’d love you to hang around – if seeing some great shots around a theme is something you’re not interested in then feel free to check out what the rest of the web offers – I’m sure there’s a site out there that has a mix of posts more suited to your tastes.

March 27th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Really great shots and very inspiring, as I live in a country where it seems to ALWAYS rain. I am nervous to use my camera in the rain (Canon EOS) and shelter is not always forthcoming. Cannot imagine holding an umbrella while shooting. Any tips?
March 27th, 2008 at 12:50 am
Amazing snaps! 3, 7, 10, 12 are tops in my book.
March 27th, 2008 at 1:12 am
beautiful and inspiring!
March 27th, 2008 at 1:55 am
It doesn’t rain much in Santa Barbara, I’m afraid, as I love this kind of weather. Of the shots above, I think number three is my favorite.
March 27th, 2008 at 3:17 am
How many of these were taken in the rain?
1st doubt it! studio lightening, with glass in front of the lens. The third one don’t make me laugh, its raining but the puddles are like mirrors!
Have a closer look at the photo’s have a think, how did they do it? where is the light coming from?
Get out into the rain and stop making photos up on the computer.

Really nice. I read this at 2:36pm and it so happens to be raining here in St. Vincent. I need to go try some pics in the rain. Hope it continues to rain by the time I leave work
March 27th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Darren – you’re a classy guy! Nicely put!
As for the rain…. Okay, I love the warmth and sun here in sunny Southern California, but seeing pics like this make me really miss the rain! Next time we get rain here, I’m going to find some way to take advantage of that 5 minutes… :D
Thanks for the inspiration.
March 27th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

April 10th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
all these photos were excellent.i felt it in a different way
that each photo tells big meaning of rain and emotions.Rain aalways tells adout the memory which can be the past or future, but it is how you feel it.Good, i really love it.i wont tell it is the best but i always remember it is one of the best.

June 7th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Great pictures, but I am scared to bring my camera when it’s raining, I don’t want to damage it! Does anyone have tips for shooting in rain, other than the obvious umbrella? =)
June 12th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
These are great, I’m surprised there are none from TOKYO, you could get 1000 a night the city is so amazing.
June 25th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Does anyone else think #3 is photoshopped? There are no raindrops in the surface of the water. This might have been because of long shutter time, but the people are not blurred enough for this! I’m puzzled.
June 25th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
At last Christina!
You have saved me!

How true it is that extreme conditions will yield the best images. Photography is not just for pretty people in pretty condition. Freeze that moment in time rain or shine. Day off from work tomorrow and forecast to rain…guess what I will be doing tomorrow.

Hello!
I was browsing for a picture that could go along with the blog post and landed on your blog. Please let me know if I could use the image from “glitter darkstar” on my blog. I tried following it on deviantart but it says that the deviation has been removed by the owner. I am not sure if who to contact.
Waiting for your reply.
So long!

Some of these are just fantastic. I especially like the solitude of After the Rain, and Vampire Season.
Living in Oregon, the chances for rainy photos are pretty good during the late fall to mid-spring seasons.

Love the images. It makes me almost sad that today is sunny!
Can’t wait for the rain to get out there and make some pictures
also, yes some are photoshopped slightly namel;y no.3 the rain is added but still the photog got out when it was wet and heavily misty (which is still not great for the camera) and took some shots, that kinda the point of the post

All of them are gorgeous… Although the third one, “Rain in Cracow” would be more believable if there were water drops in the puddles.

Great topic.
I might as well share an old “bad weather” shot of mine (1979, Pentax ME, then-brand-new Tamron cat 500mm). This shot I had planned in my head months before getting the lens. I then had to wait anxiously for weeks before I got the correct heavy downpour.
While we’re on the subject of old shots, I have some more, non-digital, but hell, I’m old and proud! ;-)
http://picasaweb.google.com/pierre.castonguay/ArchivesDiapos#
I now carry K10D and K100D bodies, along with lenses nearly as old as I am (52) and brand-new DA glass. I’m a happy bloke, getting to use older and newer stuff and loving it. Some of these Pentax lenses I’ve been using for nearly 40 years!
You might be tempted to have a look at the “Vieux-Québec” album for a taste of the digital stuff.
Have a nice day!

Rain is always thought provocative.Painters use it to depict their moods. But I find the. same reflectance in the first 13 photos. Covey my accolades to these photographers specially the first and second ones.
October 30th, 2009 at 2:14 am
Beautiful and encouraging. I’ll give it a go. Thanks.
October 30th, 2009 at 5:44 am
Hey, M – I’ve read a few articles of late where pro photographers have shared the p & s cameras they carry. One of them was so happy with his P & S (albeit a high-end one) he almost -but not quite – convinced me to forego a DSLR. Now that I’m shooting with the DSLR, I seldom use my P & S but carry it with me “just in case”. Also, when I’m heading out without the purposeful intent of taking publishable photos I grab the P & S.
The good ones know the value of a really good P & S and they make a point of carrying them around.

Hi.just informed about these amazing rainy day photos by my friend..perfect collection..Beatifullllllll
October 30th, 2009 at 10:48 am
Hello!
I have a question and I really hope to receive an answer… I suppose that in the third picture it is used a fast shutter speed as the raindrops are caught so precisely in their fall. But how do one have such a bright image with so fast shutter speed? Obviously, there is no flash used… Could somebody please explain it to me :(
October 30th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
@Morsmordre – I suspected that something wasn’t right about the third one too because if you notice, there isn’t any droplet rings in any of the puddles. All the puddles are smooth as glass. So with your observation and mine, I’m becoming more convinced that the falling rain was added in PhotoShop and wasn’t part of the original photo. Not that I think less of the photo now… I still think it a spectacular photo.
October 30th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
its fantastic and i hope i can be as good as all of you guys!!! keep up the good work and more photos to share.
October 30th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
This article on photography in the rain is a joy to look and read ! I am in Mizoram state of northeast India, having tropical rains every year. So , rain is part of life here. However, I have not tried to take photographs with my cannon 40D. I actually had devised a rain cover for my camera 2 years ago,but had not tried it in the rain. May be next year I also will try it. Thankd alot .
October 30th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
morsmordre, it looks to me like the raindrops were photoshopped into the picture. maybe not but that is my guess. I say that because there are no ripples in the water. One, maybe two people are carrying umbrellas. Perhaps the rain had just ended or there was a light drizzle. It’s a good question as I wondered the same!
October 31st, 2009 at 1:26 am
wonderful photographs!simple but very beautiful…..
could you please explain about the shutter speed that u gave?
October 31st, 2009 at 5:21 am
wonderful photos and obviously a popular subject to choose.
I don’t much chance with rain shots since here in the desert it seems to only rain on one day of the year and was fortunate enough to catch it in my yard.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Fabulous images. Rainy days are an opportunity to shutterbugs, indeed.
